How Facebook ad costs are calculated
Meta sells ads in an auction. You set a budget and Meta charges you as your ad is shown, so the real cost of a result depends on three things: how much each thousand impressions costs (CPM), how often people click (CTR) and how often clicks turn into a purchase or lead (conversion rate).
- Impressions = spend divided by CPM, multiplied by 1,000
- Clicks = impressions multiplied by CTR
- Conversions = clicks multiplied by conversion rate
- Cost per click = spend divided by clicks
- Cost per conversion = spend divided by conversions
Worked example
A store spends 50 dollars a day for 30 days, so 1,500 dollars in total. With a 12 dollar CPM the ads get about 125,000 impressions. A 1.2% CTR produces about 1,500 clicks, which is a cost per click of 1 dollar. If 2.5% of those visitors buy, the campaign makes about 37 sales at roughly 40 dollars each.
What changes your Facebook ad costs
- Seasonality, CPMs often rise sharply in November and December
- Audience size and competition in your country and niche
- Creative quality, which drives CTR and the relevance Meta assigns your ad
- Landing page speed and offer strength, which drive conversion rate
- Your optimisation event, purchases cost more than link clicks
Frequently asked questions
How much do Facebook ads cost per day?
You choose the budget. Many small stores start with 20 to 50 dollars a day per ad set so Meta can collect enough data to optimise. The cost per result depends on CPM, CTR and conversion rate.
What is a good CPM for Facebook ads?
It varies by country, season and audience. In many western markets ecommerce CPMs fall roughly between 8 and 25 dollars, and they are usually lower in emerging markets. Track your own numbers over time rather than chasing a universal benchmark.
Is the calculator accurate?
It is a projection based on the inputs you provide. Real campaigns vary day to day, so use it for planning and scenario testing, then replace the inputs with your actual results after a few days.
How can I lower my cost per conversion?
Improve the creative to raise CTR, improve the landing page to raise conversion rate, and give campaigns enough budget to exit the learning phase. Studying ads that competitors keep running is a fast way to find angles that work.
Does this work for Instagram ads too?
Yes. Instagram ads are bought through the same Meta auction, so the same formulas apply.
