Hamburg in fresh snow is the best reminder that “bad weather” is usually just “good light.” These shots were taken yesterday evening and I’m not gonna lie: I was completely soaked, fingers numb, camera bag slowly turning into a sponge… and still didn’t want to go home. Snow was coming in sideways, and every street lamp turned into a little softbox. The city gets quieter, reflections get cleaner, and even the most familiar streets suddenly look like a film set. 👉🏼 Comment Preset to get the exact look. A few practical things that helped me out there (especially when you’re freezing and your settings menu feels like a puzzle): 1️⃣ Choose the shot over perfection Snow + low light will push your ISO. Take it. A sharp frame with a bit of grain will always beat a “clean” image that’s slightly soft. 2️⃣ Expose for the snow (and protect the highlights) Cameras love turning snow into grey. Add exposure (often +0.7 to +1.3 EV), then check your histogram and pull highlights back in post. Your whites should feel like snow, not concrete. 3️⃣ Stabilize smarter, not harder If you don’t have a tripod, use what’s there: lamp posts, railings, trash bins, your backpack. In slush, I often shoot a faster shutter speed than I think I need. 4️⃣ Watch your focus + contrast Autofocus can struggle in a white, low-contrast scene. Use a street light, a sign edge, or a person as your focus target, then recompose. Manual focus is not “old school”, it’s a cheat code. 5️⃣ Keep your gear alive in the cold Batteries die faster, lenses fog up when you go indoors, and snow melts everywhere. Keep a cloth in your pocket, swap batteries early, and let the camera warm up in the bag before opening it inside. Do you enjoy shooting in snow, or are you more of a “I’ll wait for spring” person?
