Some people like popping pimples... I like popping hips. 💥🦴 Wait for the POP! There is nothing quite like the feeling (and sound) of a successful closed reduction. When a patient comes into the ER with a luxated (dislocated) hip, getting that femoral head back into the acetabulum takes a mix of finesse, leverage, and sometimes a whole lot of elbow grease. We always make sure the patient is completely pain-free and relaxed under heavy sedation or general anesthesia before we get to work. Once we feel that satisfying “clunk” back into the socket, we often use hobbles or a special sling to keep the leg immobilized while the joint capsule heals up. 🩹🦴 Have you ever heard that pop in real life? Two C-sections in one night. One dog, one cat. The first ended in heartbreak when the puppy didn’t make it. The second brought relief with an entire litter of healthy, surviving kittens. This field is a constant pendulum between the highest highs and the lowest lows, often just hours apart. You carry the bad, but the good keeps you going. — Dr Duncan the Vet #drduncanthevet #vetlife #emergencyvet #veterinarymedicine #askavet G’day! Some days are harder than others… I try my best every single day, even when I’m feeling less switched on. But some days in veterinary medicine are just incredibly heavy. Today, I had to deliver the heartbreaking news to a family that their sweet dog has cancer. Breaking that kind of news never gets easier, and it is by far the hardest part of this job. My heart goes out to every family navigating a difficult diagnosis right now. Hug your furry best friends a little tighter tonight. 💔 If you are ever worried about your pet’s health, or need guidance and support through the tough moments, the ASK A VET™ team is here to help you navigate it. 🔗 get.askavet.com 👨‍⚕️ @drduncanthevet #VetLife #VeterinaryMedicine #PetCancer #AskAVet #DogCare

Cat Blood Transfusions: Who Should Get the Blood? 🐱🩸 I was chatting with Dr Dalton about something most pet owners never think about: Cat blood is limited. And that makes blood transfusions in cats very different from dogs. In Australia, getting cat blood can be incredibly difficult. There often isn’t a neat little blood bank sitting there ready to go. Sometimes, to save one cat, another healthy donor cat has to be found, tested, sedated, and bled. And yes… Usually that means finding a big, healthy, chunky cat who can safely donate. Not exactly a casual Tuesday. But in Hong Kong, it can be very different. Packed red blood cells for cats can be much more readily available, which sounds amazing — and it is. But it also creates a serious ethical question: Just because we can give blood… should we? Blood transfusions can save lives. They can be incredible for trauma, acute blood loss, severe anaemia, surgery cases, toxin cases, and emergencies where a cat has a real chance of recovery. But what about cats with: FeLV Advanced chronic kidney disease End-stage cancer Severe chronic disease Conditions where blood may only give a little more time That’s where it gets hard. Because blood is not unlimited. And every bag used for one patient may mean another patient cannot receive it later. So vets have to think about more than just: “Can we do it?” We also have to ask: “Is this fair?” “Is this kind?” “Is this giving meaningful quality time?” “Or are we just prolonging the inevitable?” As vets, we want to help every animal. But with limited resources, especially blood, ethics matter. Cat transfusions are not just a medical decision. They are a welfare decision. A resource decision. And sometimes, a very emotional family decision. There is no easy answer. But the honest conversation matters. Blood can save a life. But it should be used where it has the best chance to truly help. When should pets be desexed? Cats vs Dogs 🐱🐶 I chatted with Dr Dalton about one of the most common questions pet owners ask: “When should I desex my pet?” And the answer is… cats and dogs are very different. For cats, desexing is usually recommended earlier because they can become sexually mature very young, reproduce quickly, and contribute to unwanted litters. Early desexing also helps reduce roaming, fighting, spraying, and some reproductive health risks. For dogs, it’s more individual. The best timing can depend on: 🐶 Breed ⚖️ Size 🦴 Growth and joint development 🧬 Cancer risk 🐾 Behaviour ❤️ Lifestyle 🩺 Medical history Small dogs may be suitable earlier, while large and giant breed dogs may benefit from waiting until they are more physically mature. There is no perfect “one-size-fits-all” answer. The best decision is made by looking at the individual pet, their breed, their risk factors, and having a proper chat with your vet. Cats: usually earlier. Dogs: more case-by-case. Desexing is not just about preventing puppies or kittens. It can affect health, behaviour, growth, and long-term wellbeing. Chat to your vet before making the decision. Dr Duncan ASK A VET™ Talk. Track. Trust. Ask A Vet. #AskAVet #PetHealth #Desexing #Neutering #Spaying

🚨 THE HEARTBREAKING REALITY OF MINIATURE / MICRO / POCKET BULLIES 🚨 I was scrolling and ran into a breeding competition video on these guys… I just thought I should film a reaction to the Miniature and Micro Bully trend. Frankly, it is tough to watch. When dogs are bred for extreme, exaggerated features, like ultra-short legs and excessively wide chests, they are the ones paying the price. Here is what is actually going on beneath that “aesthetic”: Severe Airway Issues: Struggling for every single breath. Chronic Joint & Spinal Pain: Deformed skeletal structures carrying disproportionate weight. Constant Medical Interventions: High risks of skin allergies, heart defects, and eye issues. Shortened Lifespans: Sacrificing years of a happy life for a specific look. Dogs deserve to run freely, breathe easily, and live without chronic pain. We need to stop normalizing poor health for the sake of a trend and start prioritizing animal welfare. Watch my full reaction video to see the medical breakdown of exactly what these dogs are going through. What are your thoughts on this breeding trend? Let’s talk about it in the comments. 👇 #Miniaturebully #AnimalWelfare #Ethicalbreeding #AskAVet Download my app on apple or android: get.askavet.com
