MOST GOLDEN RETRIEVERS DON'T NEED MORE TRAINING. They need a different foundation. And that's probably not what most guardians want to hear. When your golden is dragging you down the street, launching themselves at every guest who walks through the door, and acting like they've never heard their name the second you leave the house... The natural reaction is to look for a quick fix. A better harness. A better collar. A better trainer. A better YouTube video. Something that finally gives you control. But after helping Golden Retrievers all over the world, I've noticed something interesting: Most people aren't actually trying to build an obedient dog. They're trying to build a dog they can enjoy life with. They want to stop avoiding family gatherings because they're worried their dog will body-slam Auntie Mabel into the potato salad. They want to sit outside a café for ten minutes without their dog treating every passing human, dog, squirrel, bird, leaf, and gust of wind like a personal invitation to party. They want to take their dog on holiday without spending the entire trip apologising. In other words: They don't want a perfectly trained dog. They want an Anywhere Dog. The problem is that most training advice focuses on stopping behaviour. "Don't pull." "Don't jump." "Don't bark." "Don't react." But Golden Retrievers aren't robots. And they're rarely stubborn. They're deeply social dogs who feel everything intensely. Excitement. Frustration. Anticipation. Curiosity. Connection. Most of the behaviours people struggle with aren't obedience problems. They're emotional regulation problems. And you can't solve an emotional regulation problem with control alone. That's why so many guardians end up stuck in a frustrating cycle. The dog pulls. They buy a harness. The dog still pulls. They try a new technique. The dog still pulls. They watch another trainer. Try another method. Buy another tool. Wait another six months hoping maturity will magically fix everything. But here's the uncomfortable truth: Dogs don't usually grow out of behaviours. They grow into them. Practice makes permanence. Hope isn't a training strategy. Which brings us to what actually creates an Anywhere Dog. First, build calm. Not exhaustion. Calm. Many guardians accidentally create canine athletes by trying to tire their dog out. The more exercise they do, the fitter they become. The fitter they become, the more exercise they need. It's an endless treadmill. Instead, calmness needs to become valuable. A skill. A choice. A place the dog knows how to access. Second, build a social bubble. Most Golden Retrievers believe the world exists specifically for them. Every person is a future best friend. Every dog is a potential playmate. Every squirrel is an exciting opportunity. The goal isn't to teach them to ignore the world. The goal is to teach them that not everything requires participation. Sometimes things happen around them and it's none of their business. That emotional stability changes everything. Finally, practice before you need the behaviour. One of the biggest mistakes owners make is testing skills before they've trained them. They go straight to the café. Straight to the family barbecue. Straight to the busy walking trail. Then they're surprised when their dog struggles. But successful dogs aren't built in difficult environments. They're prepared for difficult environments. You don't train café behaviour at the café. You build café behaviour at home first. Then you gradually bring it into the real world. And here's what I love most about this approach: It changes the relationship completely. It stops being You vs Your Golden. Because your dog isn't trying to make your life difficult. They're trying to navigate a world that asks them to behave in ways that don't come naturally. The moment guardians understand that, everything changes. Training becomes less about control. And more about partnership. Less frustration. More understanding. Less conflict. More progress. Every time somebody asks me what an Anywhere Dog actually is, I think of photos like this. This is one of our academy members, Kirsty with Eddie and Herbie during their trip through the Pyrenees. Not because they're "perfect" dogs. Not because they never get excited. But because they've learned how to regulate those emotions, settle when needed, and navigate the world alongside their humans. That's what we're building. Not obedience for obedience's sake. Freedom. Freedom to travel. Freedom to explore. Freedom to say yes to adventures instead of leaving your dog behind. If you're wondering where your Golden Retriever is right now on that journey, comment SCORECARD and I'll send you the Anywhere Dog Scorecard. It'll help you identify exactly where you are today, so you know what to focus on next week, next month, and beyond.

If you've been following along for a while, this one's for you. 👀 It's my birthday this week. And the best thing I could think to do was open the doors to The Golden Academy. 🏆 Here's the thing though. The waitlist email went out to just over 26,000 people. There are 50 spots. The Golden Academy is breed-specific training built entirely around your golden — not a generic dog that doesn't exist. The pulling, the selective deafness, the sock theft 0.018 seconds after it hits the floor, the launching at other dogs, the full-body-slam greetings — we tackle all of it in a way that finally makes sense, because it's built for your breed. For this birthday cohort I've also added something special — The Rescue Call. A live session with me personally (not my team — me) to map out exactly where to start. I only run this when numbers are small enough to make it worth everyone's time. That's on top of the birthday bonuses: 🐕 The My Golden's Not Foodie Fix 🎯 The Pick 'n' Mix Tricks Course 📋 The Golden Planner 🎽 Goldens Deserve Better t-shirt for annual members, shipped anywhere in the world 🏆 2 months FREE for annual members 💛 30 days to decide if we're your people, if not, instant refund. No quibble. We're not an online course. We're a worldwide community of Golden Geeks — and we believe two things build an Anywhere Dog: the right plan, and the right support. You need both. No waitlist, no spot. DM or comment the code: LIST and I'll make sure your invite is sent. 🐾
