"When I canceled the condo, the realtor stared at me. ""You've already paid the forty-five-thousand-dollar down payment. Aren't you waiting for your fiance to come back and sign with you?"" I smiled and set the keys on the desk. ""No. He's busy taking his first love shopping near Mount Fuji."" For five years, every winter, Ryan Hale went to Japan. He called it business. But the photos he posted were always of Fuji's snow-covered peak. Whenever I asked when he would take me there for our honeymoon, he said, ""Next time."" Then yesterday, in an old camera he'd left at home, I found dozens of pictures. The same woman. The same angles. The same background. Cherry blossoms. White snow. Mount Fuji. The only trip he had ever taken with me was to the next city over to look at this condo. He had held my hand and said, ""Maya, we don't need all that flashy stuff. We just need a real life together."" I believed him. When it was time to sign the cancellation papers, I looked at the condo I had decorated myself and suddenly broke down. I cried so hard I could barely breathe. The realtor carefully pushed a pen toward me. ""Do you still want to cancel?"" I wiped my tears and smiled. ""Yes."" My resignation had already been approved. This was my last night in this city. Mount Fuji would never come to me. But I could walk away. …… The moment I stepped out of the real estate office, Claire called. ""Maya, did you really cancel it?"" ""I did."" ""The down payment was forty-five thousand dollars. You just canceled it by yourself?"" ""Yes."" ""Does Ryan know?"" ""He's in Japan."" ""For work?"" I didn't answer. Claire went silent for two seconds. ""Did you tell him?"" ""No."" ""Maya, even if you're fighting, the condo isn't something you can just..."" ""I found dozens of photos in his old camera. Same woman. Same mountain. Five years."" The other end went quiet. ""Hannah Pierce?"" ""Yes."" ""Are you sure it's not a misunderstanding?"" ""What kind of business trip involves photographing the same woman in the same place for five winters?"" Claire stopped talking. I hung up and drove back to the apartment. On the way, Ryan sent me a text. A photo. Hot chocolate in a white ceramic cup. A little deer was painted on the side. Caption: ""It's snowing in Tokyo. Freezing."" I recognized that cup. He had sent me almost the same photo last winter, same angle, same composition. Back then, I asked him which cafe it was. He said he'd wandered in at random and couldn't remember. But there was another photo in the old camera. Hannah sitting in that same cafe, the same hot chocolate by her hand, smiling at the lens. She was wearing a burgundy scarf I had never seen before. Five years. Every winter. The same cafe. The same cup of hot chocolate. The same woman. And what he sent me was always food and scenery. Never the person beside him. When I reached the apartment and bent to change my shoes, my eyes fell on the shoe cabinet. Beside Ryan's sneakers was a pair of white canvas shoes. Tiny. A size five. I wore a seven. I lifted one shoe and found a sticky note tucked under the insole. ""Ry, wear this pair next time. The last ones rubbed your heels."" Ry. Five years together, and I had never known he had a nickname. He had never let me call him that. I put the shoes back and went into the bedroom. His laptop was still open, the screen glowing. A travel booking page sat there: Hokkaido. February fourteenth departure. Two-person hot spring package. Private bath. Kaiseki dinner included. The note field read: Hannah's birthday gift. Hannah's birthday was February fifteenth. Mine was March ninth. Last March ninth, I asked Ryan if he could have dinner with me. He said he had a business dinner. I waited until eleven that night before he texted, ""Just got home. You asleep? Happy birthday. I'll make it up to you."" Make it up. Just like ""next time."" Neither ever came true. I opened the cloud album on his phone. More than three thousand photos. Eleven of me. Seven were from the first year we dated. In the next four years, there were four. There was a folder called Tokyo Snow. I opened it. All Hannah. Hannah in a kimono. Hannah stepping through snow. Hannah with her palms pressed together in front of a shrine. Every shot was beautifully framed, softened by light, like a magazine spread. When he took pictures of me, he always tapped the shutter once and handed the phone back. No angle. No light. No care. Once I had said, ""Can you try to take one where I look nice?"" He answered, ""It's just a photo. Good enough."" Good enough. Those two words were what he gave me most. His video call came in. I answered. On screen, he wore a gray coat. Behind him was a hotel hallway. ""Did you eat?"" ""Yes."" ""I'll be back the day after tomorrow. Flight lands at three."" ""Okay."" ""Your voice sounds off."" ""I'm tired."" ""Sleep early."" He was about to hang up when a woman's voice came from behind him. ""Ry, the car's here."" He turned his head. ""Coming."" Then he looked back at me. ""Hannah's calling me. I have to go."" ""Why is she at your hotel?"" ""She's staying next door. We're just going out to eat."" ""Every year?"" ""Our schedules happened to overlap. Don't overthink it."" He smiled naturally, as if explaining something that did not need an explanation. ""Oh, I got you a fridge magnet. Took forever to pick one."" He hung up. I walked to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator. Five fridge magnets were stuck to the door. All Mount Fuji. Different sizes, different years. Five years of love. Every souvenir I had ever received from Japan. Hannah got hot spring hotels, kimono experiences, birthday surprises, and a nickname only she could use. My phone lit up again. He sent another picture. A deer-shaped fridge magnet, still in its plastic. ""Cute, right? Hannah helped me pick it."" Even the gift he bought for me had her fingerprints on it. I typed, ""What did you bring Hannah?"" My finger hovered over send. Then I deleted it, one character at a time. I replied with one word. ""Nice."" Ryan came home. He dragged his suitcase through the door, pulled a small paper bag from the side pocket, and handed it to me. ""Your fridge magnet."" Then he took a much larger shopping bag from another pocket and set it in the entryway. ""What's that?"" ""For Hannah. A scarf. She said she liked the patterns in Tokyo."" A corner of the scarf showed at the top of the bag. Deep red. Cashmere. I touched it. It was soft. Last winter, I told him I wanted a cashmere scarf. He said, ""Why buy another scarf? Don't you already have several?"" The several in my closet were all ones I had bought myself. ""You brought her a scarf?"" ""She asked. It was on the way."" He changed his shoes, walked into the living room, and dropped onto the sofa. ""I'm dead tired. Four-hour flight."" ""When are you taking me to Japan?"" He froze for half a second. ""Why bring that up all of a sudden?"" ""It isn't sudden. I've been asking for five years."" ""When this busy stretch is over. Next time."" Next time. The seventeenth ""next time."" I said nothing else. Before dinner, his mother called. ""Maya, Ryan's back, isn't he?"" ""He is, Mrs. Hale."" ""You two need to hurry with the wedding. People keep asking me about invitations."" ""We're still preparing."" ""Hannah came by last week and helped me choose candy favors. She picked four flavors. See what you think."" My hand stopped around my fork. ""Hannah helped you choose them?"" ""Yes. She said you were busy with work and came over on her own. Such a thoughtful girl."" I looked at Ryan. He was scrolling on his phone with his head down. ""Mrs. Hale, you can tell me about wedding details. You don't need to trouble her."" ""Trouble? She comes over all the time. Three or four times a month. More often than you."" In our second year together, I suggested visiting his mother every week. Ryan said, ""No need to go that often. My mom doesn't like the house too lively."" So I changed it to once a month. Later he said, ""You're busy. Once every two months is fine."" So it wasn't that his mother disliked visitors. She disliked me visiting. Hannah came three or four times a month, and no one found her annoying. ""Mrs. Hale, I'll handle the favors."" ""All right. But the ones Hannah picked are really good. Use them as a reference."" After the call, I asked Ryan, ""You asked Hannah to help your mother choose our wedding candy?"" ""She wanted to go."" ""And you knew?"" ""Of course. My mom told me."" ""Why didn't you tell me?"" ""What was there to say? She was just helping."" ""Why is she helping with our wedding?"" ""Weren't you busy?"" ""When did I ever say that?"" He frowned. ""You work late every day. I figured you didn't have time."" ""Did you ask me?"" ""Fine, fine. From now on you can do everything yourself. Happy?"" The impatience had arrived. It was always like this. First, ""Don't overthink it."" Then, ""What is there to say?"" Finally, ""Fine, you're right about everything."" Nothing was ever solved. My phone lit up again. His mother had sent a photo. Hannah stood in Mrs. Hale's kitchen wearing an apron and holding a dish, smiling gently. Caption: Hannah's pot roast tastes just like mine. Hannah looked more at home in that kitchen than I ever had. She knew where the plates were, which drawer held the spices, what Mrs. Hale liked to eat. In five years, every time I visited, I had to ask. Because I went too rarely. Because Ryan said I didn't need to go often. Another message followed. ""Maya, let me be honest. I watched Hannah grow up. She and Ryan know each other inside out. You're a good girl, but you aren't very good at taking care of people. You should learn from Hannah."" I set my phone facedown on the table. Ryan came in. ""Why aren't you eating?"" ""I'm not hungry."" He went to the closet for pajamas, and I saw a red velvet box peeking from the inner pocket of his suit jacket. ""What's that?"" ""Oh, this."" He took it out. ""Hannah's birthday gift. A necklace."" He opened the box. A thin silver chain. The pendant was a cherry blossom, and a single letter was engraved at its center. R. Ryan's R. ""Custom made. Took two months."" Our engagement ring had been bought online. When it arrived, he opened the package and slid it directly onto my finger. I said I wanted to choose one in a store. He said, ""Rings are all the same. No need to make a trip."" ""You had a necklace custom-made for her?"" ""It's her birthday. Just something small."" ""What did you give me on my birthday?"" He thought for a moment. ""Last year... I think I sent you money?"" ""You didn't."" ""Then I forgot. I'll make it up next time."" Next time. Always next time. ""Ryan, do you think what we have is normal?"" ""Why wouldn't it be?"" ""You custom-order Hannah a necklace and buy me a fridge magnet. You celebrate her birthday and forget mine. You let her go to your mother's house to help, while I don't even get the chance. Do you think that's normal?"" He set the box down and sighed. ""You're doing this again. Hannah and I grew up together. What's wrong with me being nice to her?"" ""What about me?"" ""Am I not good to you? We've dated for five years, bought a condo, and we're getting married. Isn't that enough?"" His voice rose. ""Maya, we don't need all that flashy stuff. A steady life matters more than anything."" All that flashy stuff. Hot spring hotels were flashy. Custom necklaces were flashy. Birthday surprises were flashy. He gave all the flashy things to Hannah. What he left me was ""a steady life."" ""You're right."" I turned off the light and lay down with my back to him. ""Let's live steadily."" The next day, Ryan's college friend Owen texted me. ""Maya, we're having a get-together Saturday. Are you coming?"" ""What get-together?"" ""Old classmates. Hannah will be there too."" Hannah would be there too. Of course. On Saturday night, by the time we arrived, Hannah was already seated in the private room. White knit dress. The cherry blossom necklace around her neck. The R on the pendant flashed under the light. ""Ry!"" She waved at Ryan, her voice syrupy sweet. Ryan walked over and sat beside her as naturally as breathing. I followed and sat on his other side. ""Maya's here!"" Owen greeted me. ""Don't call her that like she's already family,"" Hannah corrected him with a smile. ""They're not married yet."" Owen asked Ryan, ""Set a date?"" ""We're still looking."" ""Hannah's helped a lot, right? Your mom said she runs over all the time."" ""She's just helpful."" Hannah lowered her eyes and stirred her drink, shy-faced. ""I'm only helping a little. Maya's so busy."" She called me by name with such warmth. But my fiance's custom necklace was sitting at her throat. ""Hannah, that's a gorgeous necklace. Who gave it to you?"" One of the women leaned closer. Hannah held the pendant and glanced at Ryan. ""A friend."" ""What kind of friend is that generous? It's custom, isn't it?"" ""I gave it to her,"" Ryan said. ""Birthday gift. I bought it casually."" Casually. Two months for a custom order, and he called it casual. The woman looked from me to Ryan. ""You bought one for your fiancee too, right?"" ""Maya doesn't like wearing things like that."" It wasn't that I didn't like them. He had never bought me any, so he assumed I didn't like them. ""You don't mind, do you, Maya?"" Hannah asked. ""No."" ""You're so generous."" Halfway through dinner, Owen started making trouble. ""Come on, let's test how well you know each other. Ryan, what's your fiancee's favorite flower?"" Ryan thought about it. ""Roses?"" ""No. Lisianthus."" ""Her birthday?"" ""March..."" He hesitated. ""Ninth?"" He got it right only after a pause. ""What is she most afraid of?"" ""She isn't afraid of anything,"" he said with a laugh. ""Maya's brave."" I was afraid of the dark. I told him that our first year together. He had forgotten. Owen laughed. ""Terrible. Hannah, your turn. What's Ryan's favorite coffee?"" ""Americano, light sugar, warm."" ""What is he most afraid of?"" ""Thunder. When he was little, lightning hit a tree in his yard and he cried."" ""His catchphrase?"" ""'Good enough.'"" The whole table laughed. Owen slapped the table. ""Hannah knows Ryan better than his fiancee."" ""We've known each other ten years,"" Hannah said. Ten years. She had known him ten. I had known him five. She knew he was afraid of thunder. I didn't. It wasn't that I didn't want to know him. He had never told me. With me, every answer was ""whatever,"" ""anything,"" ""nothing worth telling."" With Hannah, he lit up like a different person. Near the end of dinner, I went to the restroom. Hannah followed me in. ""Maya."" She leaned against the sink and touched up her lipstick in the mirror. ""I want to say something. Don't take it the wrong way."" ""Say it."" ""Ry can be careless, but he's not a bad man. Don't be too hard on him."" ""I'm not."" ""He told me you've been emotional lately, always getting upset over things about me."" He had told Hannah about the problems between us. ""Maya, I'll be blunt. If you can't give him even this much trust, then what's the point of marrying him?"" ""He goes to Japan with you every year. What exactly am I supposed to trust?"" Hannah paused, then smiled. ""Those are business trips."" ""Business trips don't happen in the same place every year, at the same hotel, photographing the same woman."" Her smile stayed, but her eyes chilled. ""Maya, Ry and I are friends. If you insist on imagining something else, that's your problem."" She picked up her bag and paused at the door. ""By the way, for the living room wall in your condo, I suggested warm gray. Ry thinks it looks better than the cream white you chose."" The door shut. The living room wall. I had chosen cream white and watched the workers paint it twice. Ryan had not gone there once. But he had let Hannah give opinions, and he liked hers better than mine. I splashed water on my face and walked out. Ryan was by the door. ""What took so long?"" ""Washing my hands."" ""Let's go. We'll drop Hannah off."" ""Can't she go by herself?"" ""It's on the way."" Hannah lived on the East Side. We lived on the West Side. On what planet was that on the way? ""You take her. I'll get a cab."" ""Don't make a scene. Come on."" In the car, Hannah sat in the passenger seat. I sat in the back. She changed the radio to a Japanese station. ""Ry, remember this song? It played in that izakaya in Tokyo last year."" ""I remember. You even sang along."" They both laughed. In the back seat, I was an extra passenger. When we reached Hannah's building, she got out, bent down, and looked at me. ""Maya, rest early."" Then she turned to Ryan. ""Ry, don't forget that thing next week."" ""I know."" She closed the door and walked away. I moved from the back seat to the front. ""What thing?"" ""Helping her move a cabinet."" ""She can hire movers."" ""Why waste money on that?"" Last year I asked him to move one box of books for me. He said his back hurt and told me to hire movers. For Hannah's cabinet, he would go himself. ""Ryan, do you ever feel like you're better to Hannah than you are to me?"" He sighed. ""She grew up with me. Being good to her is a habit. But you're the one I'm marrying. Isn't that enough?"" I smiled. ""Enough."" On Saturday morning, I cooked breakfast. ""Ryan, can you stay home today?"" Rice porridge, salted egg, a little plate of pickles. His favorite. ""What's wrong?"" ""I want you to spend the day with me."" He looked surprised. ""Sure. I don't have plans anyway."" ""Really?"" ""Really. What do you want to do?"" ""Nothing. Just stay home."" ""Okay."" He smiled and sat down to eat. I sat across from him and tried to memorize his face. ""Ryan."" ""Hm?"" ""Do you love me?"" His chopsticks stopped over the egg. ""Why ask that all of a sudden?"" ""I want to hear you say it once."" ""I'm marrying you. What do you think?"" ""Marriage and love aren't the same thing."" ""What's going on with you today?"" ""I just want to hear you say it."" He set his chopsticks down and looked at me. ""Maya, of course I..."" His phone rang. He glanced down. ""It's Hannah."" ""Don't answer."" ""Let me see."" He swiped the screen open. ""She says a pipe burst at her place. Water everywhere."" ""She can call building maintenance."" ""It's the weekend. Maintenance is off."" ""Then she can call a plumber."" ""By the time a plumber gets there, her apartment will be flooded."" He stood. ""I'll go take a look. I'll be back soon."" ""Ryan, you promised you wouldn't go out today."" ""I know, but this is urgent."" ""You always say that."" ""A pipe burst. I can't just ignore it."" ""What about me?"" ""What about you? You're fine."" I was fine. He always thought I was fine. Hannah's burst pipe was urgent. My broken heart was not. In our first year together, when he confessed, he said, ""Maya, I want to spend my life with you."" That day, he took me to a little beef noodle place and said we would come back every anniversary. He forgot the second-year anniversary. In the third year, I reminded him, and he said, ""It's just a bowl of noodles. Another day is the same."" In the fourth and fifth years, I stopped mentioning it. He never remembered again. ""Go."" ""One hour, tops. I'll come back and be with you."" He put on his coat, grabbed his toolbox, and looked back at me from the door. ""Don't be mad."" The door closed. One hour passed. Then two. Then three. I called him. ""Almost done. The pipe's fixed, but there's water everywhere. I'm helping her mop."" ""When are you coming back?"" ""Soon."" Another hour passed. He texted, ""Hannah says thank you for letting me come. She's treating me to lunch. I'll head back after."" I didn't reply. Then he sent, ""Eat first. Don't wait for me."" I sat in the living room and looked at the cold porridge on the table. The soft yolk in the egg had hardened. I had asked whether he loved me. He never finished the sentence. Because Hannah's phone call mattered more than my question. I stood and went into the bedroom. I opened the closet and pulled out two suitcases. I didn't actually own much in this home. One suitcase for clothes. Half a suitcase for books and small things. On the bathroom counter, I had only a toothbrush and a bottle of cleanser. Hannah had more here than I did. Canvas shoes. A jacket. A mug. A tube of lipstick. I took off my engagement ring. I placed it on the coffee table. Beside it, I lined up the five fridge magnets. Then I left a note. ""Ryan, I canceled the condo. I'm returning the ring. I'm returning the five fridge magnets too. Find someone else for the honeymoon."" I pulled my suitcases to the entryway. Before leaving, I looked back one last time. There was a dent in the sofa where Ryan always sat. Hannah's coaster sat on the coffee table. Her strawberry yogurt was in the refrigerator. Her canvas shoes were in the cabinet. This home was full of Ryan and Hannah. My whole life here fit into two suitcases. I closed the door softly behind me and did not lock it. The rideshare was waiting downstairs. The driver helped load my luggage. ""Where to?"" ""The train station."" When the car pulled out of the complex, I did not look back. I put my phone on silent. Three hours later, the train arrived. In this new city, no one waited at the exit. This time, I didn't mind. I turned on my phone. Messages poured in like a storm. >>😍Over 95% of our readers can't stop recommending this! 👉👉"

"After a heart-wrenching betrayal from her fiance, Kerris decides that no man or wolf is worth waiting for 💔. Her dreams of a pure and sacred mating night is nothing but a little girl's silly fantasies. With her father's life on the line and no one to help her, the only way to save him is to finally rid herself of her ""purity."" Just one night in the Flower Den brothel to keep her beloved father breathing 😔. Then, her masked client steps into the room. What does she do when he reveals his face… #Omegaverse #WolfRomance #ForbiddenLove #MaskedMysteriousHero #HeartbreakAndRedemption #ShifterRomance Chapter 1 Kerris POV 2 Days Before Christmas The Stone twin towers sit proudly across the street from my taxi. At half past four, the sunlight is already fading with the winter season. Decorative lights glow along the towers and neighboring buildings, giving the street an enchanting holiday charm. Let It Snow plays from a speaker outside the coffee shop beside me as I hand the driver my fare. “Keep the change. Merry Christmas.” “Thanks, miss. Enjoy the holiday,” he calls back before driving off. It’s Tuesday, and the business district is as crowded as ever. Mostly humans move along the sidewalks carrying shopping bags and gift baskets. I wait at the crossing, staring up at the twin skyscrapers on the other side of the road. More humans work here than members of the sixty-seven packs on the West Coast. To them, the company belongs to a young billionaire who made his fortune through medical technology and renewable energy. But to us werewolves, that young billionaire is Zach Stone, ruthless Alpha King of the West Coast. The humans are only half right. Fifty percent of his wealth came from reclaiming our lands and mineral deposits from the southern tyrants. I cross the street and enter the vast lobby of the second tower. It no longer feels as intimidating as it did when I was in high school. My stepsister works here now, and my fiancé, the new Alpha of our pack, is head of Stone Energy, one of the most important divisions of Stone Corporation. Today is Alpha Tyrel’s birthday. I took time off work to prepare everything for his party tonight. The only thing left on my list is to surprise him at work with his favorite fruitcake. Adora waves when she sees me approach. She’s the clerk at reception and a member of the Moon Shadow pack. I’m relieved it’s her on duty instead of one of the many humans who work here. Not only are we from the same pack, we went to high school together. Convincing her to let me upstairs unannounced should be easy enough. Thankfully, the lobby is nearly empty. According to Emily, business officially closed for the holiday today. But werewolves and a few top staff still have to work until Christmas Eve, which is tomorrow. “You look ready to parrrtay,” Adora says with a grin. “I thought the party wasn’t until later at the Alpha’s house?” She reaches for the phone to call Tyrel, but I quickly press the end button. “It is. I need him to be surprised,” I plead. “I just got this job, Kes. Are you trying to get me fired? I can’t let you go up there without informing him.” “Yes, you can. He’s not going to fire you. Come on.” She shakes her head. “Can’t take the risk. Sorry.” “Come on,” I beg. “I’ll owe you. Hold on... I brought you something.” I reach into the basket, pull out the specially wrapped slice of fruitcake, and hand it to her. I knew she’d be difficult. I came prepared. She takes it eagerly, but keeps protesting. “It’s almost five p.m., for Fate’s sake. Why can’t you just wait out here and surprise him? Or call your sister? She works in his division.” “Gee. What a brilliant idea. Why didn’t I think of that?” I roll my eyes. She shoots me a glare. “Sorry,” I say quickly. “Look, I talked to Em before coming, okay. She’s in a meeting with her bosses. She said it could take all evening.” Adora frowns. “I thought that ended half an hour ago. Guess I’m mistaken.” She peels back the wrapper slightly and stares longingly at the cake. Her expression softens. “I swear, if I get in trouble for this--” “You won’t.” She grabs a pass card and hands it over. “You’re the best.” “I know.” I smile and head to security. After flashing the pass, I’m waved through toward the elevators. I can’t help smiling as I picture Tyrel’s face when he sees me. I imagine him behind his desk, handsome features drawn into a frown, eyes glued to his computer screen. My fingers brush the engagement ring hanging from the chain around my neck. I wish I could wear it proudly on my finger, but not yet. Not until we announce our engagement to the pack. Tyrel said we’d do it once he became Alpha, so it should be soon. Maybe tonight, at his party. I think of his promotion and feel a swell of pride that he’ll be my mate. Other Alphas competed for the position, but he won it, and not because his uncle owns the place. I once applied for an internship here after graduation. I didn’t get in, despite being the former Beta’s daughter and dating Moon Shadow’s Alpha heir. They said there were no openings in my field. Applications opened again months later, but by then I was already settled at the pack chemist. Emily, on the other hand, had better luck. With her diploma in digital marketing analytics, she landed an internship here. Now she works at the biggest corporation on the West Coast, arguably in the world. I work at our local chemist. Sometimes I envy her. Especially now. Still, I always remind myself that luck isn’t everything. I have the new Alpha’s love. Soon, I’ll be his Luna. The elevator chimes open. I smooth my dress and check my lipstick in the mirrored wall. I’m about to apply more when a man steps in beside me. Minutes later, soft holiday blues drift from the corridor speakers as I make my way toward Ty’s office. His assistant isn’t at her desk. She’s human, so she must have already started her holiday leave. The silence pleases me. More privacy for the surprise. Tyrel’s office door is slightly ajar. I pause, wondering if he’s even inside. I lift my hand to knock. Then I hear it. The wet slap of flesh against flesh. A woman’s breathless cry. “Yes, yes, yesss, Ty...fvck me!” My hand drops. No. My pulse hammers as I push the door wider with trembling fingers, telling myself I’m mistaken. That there must be some explanation. There is Tyrel. Hard at work. Not at his desk. Between another woman’s legs. He hasn’t noticed me yet. His face is twisted in raw pleasure, almost unrecognizable, as he drives into her from behind. She faces away from the door, and I strain to see her. Then she turns her head. “Em...ily?” I gasp. Both of them freeze. “shtt!” Tyrel snaps, glaring at me. “What the fvck, Kes?” He doesn’t pull away from her. Emily glances at me, rolls her eyes, and still doesn’t move. That image of them together, him gripping her waist, her bent over his desk, will haunt me forever. “What the heck? are you doing here?” Tyrel barks, hands still on my stepsister’s body. I can’t speak. His tone puts me instantly on the defensive, as if I’m the one who has done something wrong. “I... I wanted to surprise you,” I stammer. “And you thought coming to my workplace uninvited was smart?” he snaps. “Shouldn’t you be at the chemist finding a drug for your condition?” My condition. My wolf still hasn’t emerged. He has never thrown it in my face before. Never once acted like it bothered him. I only turned twenty-one recently. There was still hope. A few more months of hope, at least. I stand frozen in the doorway, pain and confusion crashing through me. Isn’t he supposed to explain himself? He’s angry that I came here, yet his diclc is still inside my stepsister. My gaze shifts to Emily, and I can’t look away. She looks bold. Impatient. As if she can’t wait for me to leave so they can continue. Tyrel finally pulls away and yanks up his pants. Emily doesn’t bother covering herself. She simply stands beside the desk, dress hiked above her n@ked hips and ass. “Get out!” Tyrel roars. “We’ll talk when I get home.” Chapter 2 Kerris POV We’ll talk when I get home? “Talk about what?” I ask. “The fact that you two are--” “Fvcking,” Emily finishes. “Yup.” Tyrel scowls at her, and she adds, “What? You don’t owe her any explanation, Ty. You’re Alpha now, and what she just saw is pretty self-explanatory.” I can’t believe her attitude. The girl standing before me is nothing like the one I grew up with. The one I considered not just a sister, but my best friend all through childhood, until this moment. My knees feel weak with nausea as I stare at her. “How could you do this to--” “I said leave!” Tyrel barks. “We’ll talk after work!” He’s still speaking when I turn on shaky legs and walk out. The door slams shut behind me. Somehow, that sound is more sickening than what I just saw. They’ll continue from where they stopped. I’m sure of it. My vision blurs with tears as I rush toward the elevator. The gift basket full of cake is still clutched tightly in my hands. What am I supposed to do with it now? The elevator is thankfully empty, but only for a moment. It stops, and a few more people step in. The thought of running into another pack member and having to make small talk makes me want to jump through the glass. When the doors slide open again, I keep my head down, hoping to hide my face. Hoping to hide the tears slipping down my cheeks. “Kes, wait!” Adora calls sharply when I reach the lobby. “What the heck? happened? You said…” I wouldn’t have turned back as she trails off, but her voice sounds like she’s right behind me instead of at her desk. I spin around and walk straight into something hard and solid. Before I can move, my face presses against crisp white tailored cotton. Time stops. I jerk back. The basket slips from my hands. I look up to see the mess I’ve made. The man in the shirt was a werewolf. He had absurdly long eyelashes, hair as black as night, and a jaw sharp enough to cut through glass. His face was the kind you only see on TV and billboards. He was tall and incredibly muscular—the kind of physique that makes every female werewolf drool. When I bumped into him just now, it felt like running headfirst into a stone wall wrapped in expensive cotton. Then his gaze met mine. Gray eyes, cold and sharp. As if a weak wolf could be easily shattered by the storm in his gaze. But when he looked at me, I saw a glimmer of something even more dangerous. I knew he was probably judging me. My stained shirt, and the tears I couldn’t hide. But for some reason, he seemed to want to rip my shirt open and make me even dirtier in some wicked way. A wave of heat churned in my stomach. It can be real. He probrobly just annoyed by me. “Your Majesty,” Adora greets nervously. I want to apologize, but the words die when eyes as gray as a storm move from the bright red lipstick stain on his shirt to my face. I’ve only been in this male’s presence twice, thanks to his nephew. The words he said the first day echo in my head now. You two ever heard of a bedroom door that locks? A lady would insist on using one. The second time was at his coronation. What is the owner of this place doing here at this time of year? Shouldn’t he already be on holiday? I can feel his cold irritation even though his face remains expressionless. His eyes stay on the stained shirt as I force myself to compose. Stepping back, I curtsy, “Your Majesty, I... I’m so sorry. I didn’t see you.” “Clearly,” he repliessmooth voice that sends an unexpected shiver down my spine,“Do you always walk around painting men, or is this just for the holiday season?” My annoyance stirs, mixing with deep embarrassment. I still can’t lift my face because of my tear-streaked cheeks. Wiping them now would feel even more humiliating. “It was an accident. That’s why I said I’m sorry.” “You’re sorry, and my shirt is still ruined. This is Kiton.” “I don’t know what that means, but I can get it dry-cleaned.” “Oh, you can? You think a twenty-dollar cleaner will get this off?” Twenty what? Who the hell pays that much for dry-cleaning one shirt? King or not, he’s getting on my last nerve. I have a broken heart to deal with and do not need this right now. “Then thirty dollars?” I try to keep the sharpness out of my voice. “I’m sure I’ll find a cleaner that specializes in kingly shirts if I look hard enough.” I glance up just in time to see something shift in his eyes. The faint spark of surprise vanishes as quickly as it came. In its place is something far more dangerous. His gaze narrows slightly, the steel-gray color turning sharp enough to cut. The expression is gone almost before I can name it, but not before a disturbing thought crosses my mind. He looks like a male considering punishment someone naughty. Adora stands there awkwardly. I can feel her staring at me. The king exhales and brushes past me. “Next time, watch where you’re going, Miss Hart.” His shoulder clips mine hard enough to make me stumble sideways. The male has never liked me. His first impression of me was bad, and I’ve never had the chance to fix it. As I stare at his back, I remember the first time we met. I was a college freshman, and Tyrel and I had just started dating. He’d walked in on us kissing on the Alpha’s living room couch. No one was supposed to be home. Tyrel had just undone my second button and was kissing down my throat when he entered with steps as silent as a wild cat.I still remember the way his expression hardened when he took in the scene before him. His gaze swept over us once, lingering briefly on Tyrel's hand at my waist and the open buttons of my blouse. Before then, I’d heard so much about him and seen photos. I still remember the look he gave me as he scolded Tyrel for behaving dishonorably and declared that a lady should insist on a bedroom door that locks. Tyrel introduced us afterward. When I held out my hand for a handshake, he simply walked away. That encounter is probably why he still makes me nervous and shy. Though not today. My heart is breaking, and I have no patience for anyone’s attitude, not even the Alpha King’s. “Aren’t you going to pick that up? We don’t litter here.” He calls out without turning back. “Oh. Yeah. I... will.” I blink too hard. More tears spill down my cheeks. I wish he would just disappear into his elevator already. Shame burns through me as I gather the basket and rearrange the pastries inside. The fruitcake is smashed and scattered, some of it on the floor. “Kes, that’s the king. You know that, right? I’m glad it’s you and me in trouble now, not just me. You said Alpha Ty would be fine with your surprise.” Adora looks furious. “Guess what? You were wrong. He’s pissed, and I'm in deep shtt. What am I going to do?” My only response is to hold out the basket to her. Her face softens when she finally notices my tears. She takes it gently without another word. I all but run out of the lobby. I need to get as far away from everyone as possible. Tyrel’s party will be waiting for him when he gets home. His college friends and pack members will all be there to wish him happy birthday. I won’t be there. He said we’d talk later. I don’t see what there is to discuss. Emily’s manner, her words, that confidence; it proves they’ve been cheating on me for a while now. Different memories replay in my mind. Moments when I should have suspected something. Twice in the last two months, I came home to the sounds of sax from her bedroom. I would sit in the living room, waiting to see who my sister had finally chosen to let claim her. The male always left through the window. When I asked why, she said they weren’t ready to go public yet, but I shouldn’t worry because he was someone I knew. She’s been sleeping with my fiancé. The mystery man was Tyrel. There’s no way I’m going back to Moon Shadow right now. I need time away from the pack. Maybe for the rest of the night. Tonight won’t just be the new Alpha’s birthday, it will be celebration after celebration. I can’t deal with festive laughter and music while Tyrel Stone is the male everyone is honoring. Maybe he’ll announce that he’s engaged to Emily instead of me. The thought fills me with such a strong urge to disappear altogether. But my dad is still here. Not to mention my whole life. My phone starts ringing. I almost ignore it, assuming it’s Alpha Ty. Who else would be calling? Then I glance at the screen. Dad. Maybe he’s been to the chemist or the Alpha’s house and wants to know where I am. I clear my throat and take a deep breath so he won’t hear anything wrong when I answer. But when I slide the button, it isn’t his voice that speaks. “Am I speaking to Kerris Hart?” “Yes.” Fear instantly replaces heartbreak. “They found your father unconscious in front of your house. He was brought in by the medic. You need to come to the hospital immediately.” Chapter 3 Kerris POV My steps falter the moment I enter the pack hospital. I’m the daughter of the former Beta. High-born by any werewolf standard. The nurses here will expect me to lift my chin, breathe deep, and trace my father’s scent straight to whatever room he’s in. But I can’t. Not from the entrance. Not at all. My senses still haven’t developed that far because my wolf has never shown herself. In moments like this, I feel the weight of my condition more than ever. I’m no better than a human. “Miss Hart,” someone calls from the front desk. “Yes.” I hurry toward her. She’s the nurse who attended to Dad the last time he was admitted. “How’s my father?” “Come with me. He’s in the ER. They’re stabilizing him now.” Moments later, she leads me to a bench outside the emergency room. “You’ll have to wait here. The doctor will speak with you once they’re done.” Then she leaves me alone. I look around the familiar hallway. This wing is reserved for high-born wolves and respected members of the pack. You can tell from the polished floors, private rooms, expensive equipment, and the silence that money buys. Dad belongs here. Joseph Hart isn’t respected only because he was Beta. He’s respected because he nearly died helping build this pack into what it is today. Because he saved Alpha Gareth from a brutal death during the war. Because he bled for Moon Shadow. The Hart name carries weight wherever it’s spoken. Though lately, I’m beginning to fear it won’t for much longer. Dad’s visits to the ER have become more frequent. He burned through all his savings on treatment months ago and had to borrow money to pay the hospital the last time he was here. My legs weaken, and I sink onto the bench, burying my face in both hands. I think of calling Emily. After all, Joseph Hart is her father too. Blood never mattered to him. There were times he treated her even better than me. My hand reaches for my phone, but I can’t make myself dial. Maybe the hospital called her first. Maybe she didn’t answer because my fiancé was buried inside her. The image hits like poison. Why is the Goddess punishing me? First my sister and best friend betrays me with my fiancé. Then Dad collapses. Loneliness settles heavily on my chest as I stare at Emily’s number. There was a time we would sit here together during Dad’s hospital visits, worrying together, hoping together. Those days are over. The ER door opens, cutting through my thoughts. I quickly slide my phone back into my purse as Doctor Miles steps out. Whatever he’s about to say, I assume I’ve heard it before. Dad probably overworked himself. Maybe forgot his medication. Maybe they need to adjust treatment again. Maybe his veins are acting up. Something like that. “Miss Hart.” “Yes, Doctor.” I rise quickly. “How is he?” “He’s stable for now.” Relief starts to rise in me. Then he continues. “But I’m afraid those veins can no longer function. He needs surgery.” My relief pauses. This isn’t new. Last time they replaced damaged veins using healthy ones from another part of his body. It was expensive, yes, but manageable. “I guess you’ll do what you did last time?” I ask. “That’s the problem.” His voice softens. “He has no healthy veins left for us to harvest. We’ll need a donor.” “Okay. Test me.” “The surgery will be far more extensive than before. The medication afterward as well.” Then he names the price. My heart drops straight to the floor. The hallway tilts around me. Where are we supposed to get that kind of money? I try to hide my reaction, maintaining a straight face while he keeps speaking. “For now, machines are helping circulate fluids through his body. But that’s temporary. If we take him off support, he dies, Miss Hart. We need to proceed as soon as possible.” His words strike one after another. “Nurse Nura will bring the forms and explain the payment plan. I strongly advise making the first deposit immediately.” “I understand.” I’m not sure how my voice works with my heart sinking this fast. “You can see him now. He asked for both you and your sister. I assume she’s still at work?” “Yeah...” Working the male I thought was my fiancé. The doctor pats my shoulder and walks away. When I enter the room, Dad lies in bed looking smaller than I’ve ever seen him. Tubes run into his arms. Machines beep beside him. This morning, he was still Ol’ Beta Joe. Loud, strong, impossible to slow down. Now he looks breakable. “Where’s your sister?” he asks. “She’s working.” I take his hand. “But I’m here. What happened?” “Same shtt.” He grimaces. His frustration mirrors mine. Especially after hearing the cost of fixing it this time. “It’s going to be okay, Dad.” I squeeze his hand, mostly to comfort myself. “No, it won’t.” He grits his teeth. “I told Miles not to hook me to these damn machines. I hate being a burden on you girls. You both have your whole lives ahead of you.” “Dad--” “You should be focused on building a life with Tyrel now that he’s Alpha. Instead, you’re stuck worrying about me. I bet the bills are worse than last time.” “Please stop.” My throat tightens. “Don’t say things like that. How can you tell them not to save you? What about me? You think I can live happily if you just... die?” I bite back tears. Now is not the time to tell him Tyrel is gone too. Dad lowers his eyes, ashamed. We sit in silence while time drags forward. My mind races for solutions and finds none. Later, when I step back into the hallway, Nurse Nura has the payment forms ready. All I need to do is sign. I’m only an apprentice at the pack chemist. I don’t even have my license yet. I survive on a stipend. Emily is an intern too. She earns more at Stone Corporation, but not enough for this. Not even close. I should swallow my pride and call her. If she knew about Dad, she’d come. Wouldn’t she? I think back to Dad’s last hospital stay. Tyrel wasn’t Alpha yet. He was still my fiancé, and he stood beside me through every long night. My thumb hovers over his number. Then I lock the screen and put the phone away. Only now do I realize I have no close friends except the two people who betrayed me today. Night has fallen. The Pack Loan House will be closed by now. Even if it weren’t, Dad still owes them money. I doubt they’d lend me more. I open Wolve-Net and type: local money lender for emergency cash. Dozens of results appear. The reviews are terrifying. Threats. Broken kneecaps. Debt traps. Missing wolves. I’m about to give up when I stumble onto a peculiar forum. One name keeps appearing. The Flower Den. I’ve heard of it. A private brothel for wealthy Alphas and elite wolves. Exclusive. Selective. Discreet. They have a thorough screening process for every girl and boy they allow inside because of the powerful clientele. My thumb stills over the screen. Wait. Why am I still on their homepage? I hit back immediately, turn off my data, and shove my phone away. I’m a vlrigin by choice. My claiming and first bite are meant for my chosen mate... or my fated one. The fact that Tyrel is no longer that wolf doesn’t mean I’ll sell something as sacred as my first night to a stranger. I made a promise to myself years ago. I’m not about to break it because of hardship. And even if I did... would I earn enough in time to save Dad? Probably not. I force the thought out of my head and rise from the bench. I need air. Chapter 4 Kerris POV My hands grow restless the moment I step out into the crisp night air. Even from the hospital, I can hear music drifting in the distance. It reminds me of the birthday party at the Alpha’s house. I had taken the day off to help the omegas make everything perfect. Tyrel and everyone else will be enjoying themselves now. I pull out my phone and dial Emily’s number without hesitation this time. She can’t be celebrating while I go through this alone. I’ll tell her about Dad, then hang up. She was only four when my father married her mother. She’s called him Daddy ever since. It isn’t fair that she isn’t here. As the phone rings unanswered, I think about how distant she has become from Dad and me lately. We both assumed her work was simply more demanding than mine. Today, I found out it was more than that. The call is about to go to voicemail when I hang up. The party must have started without me. I decide to walk and clear my head. It doesn’t take long before I find myself near the Alpha’s villa. My guess was right. The celebration is in full swing. Laughter and voices spill into the night, blending with music as wolves move in and out of the brightly lit house. “What am I doing here?” I mutter. I have no intention of going inside. So why did I come? The few people I call friends are all in there. None of them have tried to call me to find out why I'm not at the party. Maybe I’m the only one who didn’t realize how little I meant to the new Alpha of Moon Shadow. I turn to head back toward the hospital. I’m not going home to an empty house tonight. Not while half the pack is celebrating at Tyrel’s place and Dad lies hooked to a machine fighting for his life. I’ve just reached the edge of the garden and am about to step onto the road when I hear, “Kerris, baby, where are you going?” It’s Gavin, Tyrel’s Beta. His tone is full of amusement as he approaches with Tyrel and Gamma Curtis beside him. “You were right, Ty,” Curtis says. “She showed up.” “I told you she would,” Tyrel says. “I know her.” I want to keep walking. But Tyrel is no longer the Alpha heir. He is Alpha now, and his Beta and Gamma are standing beside him. Turning my back could be seen as disrespect. Disrespect to one’s Alpha is a serious offense. “Why didn’t you come inside?” Tyrel asks. “I’m just passing by,” I reply for the sake of the ears nearby. “I don’t think so.” He gives a short laugh. “I think you want to come in, but you’re shy.” As Alpha, he must know Dad is in the hospital. He knows nearly everything that happens inside the pack. Was he ever planning to call and ask how Dad was doing? I doubt it. Hours have passed. “I’ll be on my way, Alpha.” I can barely stand looking at him. When I turn to leave, he catches my wrist. “Wait.” Then he dismisses Gavin and Curtis with a glance. They drift away, giving us privacy. I pull my wrist free and step back. “I said we’d talk in the house, Kes. I’ve been expecting you.” “We have nothing to talk about, Tyrel.” My voice thickens with tears. I should have been able to rely on him tonight, but instead he’s been sleeping with my stepsister. “I heard your dad is in the hospital again,” he says calmly. “I spoke to Doctor Miles. He said it’s serious this time. Is that why you’re so upset?” For a moment, I’m speechless. Is he pretending I didn’t catch him with Emily? “I’m not upset about that! I’m scared and worried. What I'm m upset about is the fact that you cheated on me with my sister!” I wait for denial. For guilt. For anything that could make this less monstrous. He only sighs. “When will you grow up, Kerris?” he says. “You said you're not ready. That’s the problem. You still think love is some perfect fairytale. You won’t let yourself be claimed until your mating night. Did you really think I’d wait forever? I’m an Alpha wolf. I have needs. Responsibilities. How could you think you’d be enough for me?” Each word lands like a slap. “You’re twenty-one with weak senses. Still can’t shift. And as if that wasn’t enough, you’re ‘saving yourself’ and refusing me.” He mocks the words with his fingers. “Talking about waiting until the Goddess binds us. News flash, Kes: we’re not fated. We never will be. The clock is ticking, and you’ve got, what, six months left? Show me a Beta-born female who still can’t shift at your age. It’s never happening for you.” “But you promised we’d be mated no matter what.” I touch the ring hanging from my necklace. “You chose me.” His eyes drop to the chain. Something flickers there before he reaches for my hand. I let him take it. “I still choose you, Kes. That’s why I’ve been waiting for you all night.” He lifts my hand and kisses it softly. “Look, just pretend you didn’t see me with your stepsister earlier. You and I aren’t mated. I’m not tied to anyone. But no matter who becomes my Luna, you’ll still be my special one. Everybody knows that.” My stomach turns. “What do you mean?” I try to pull away, but he tightens his grip. I yank free, disgusted with myself for letting his soft voice affect me for even a second. He’s a cheat. How did I forget that so quickly? “You’re acting like a child again,” he says sharply. “Look around you, Kerris. How many monogamous Alphas do you know?” “Your father.” “He’s no longer Alpha, and you know nothing about that male. You have no idea what happens in our house. You’ve built silly fantasies about the kind of life we’d have. Sorry to ruin them.” He steps closer. “You have no idea what other females would give to be in your position. To have the Alpha want them. Count yourself lucky and keep being the good girl you’ve always been. I’m willing to wait until you’re ready to be claimed. Just don’t blame me for finding relief elsewhere. Plenty of females are offering.” I retreat another step. “Then let me make it easy for you,” I say. “Go back to your harem, Alpha Ty. I’m no longer yours. Take as many females as you want. They all throw themselves at you anyway.” I lift my chin. “We are done.” “We are far from done, Kes.” He smiles and brushes a finger over the tears on my cheek. “We are anything but done, sweetling. You’re emotional. It’s been a rough evening, so I’ll give you time and space.” He starts backing away. “The next time we have this conversation, you’ll answer sensibly.” Then he turns and strolls off, leaving me staring after him. It’s hard to believe this is the same Tyrel who once promised me forever. What shames me most is that part of me had hoped he would apologize. Promise to leave Emily alone. Become the male I thought he was. That foolish part of me is still clinging to a fantasy. I’m still standing there when Emily emerges from the villa with two glasses of wine. She’s laughing as she walks up to him and kisses his cheek, oblivious to me. I duck behind a tree before she notices. Then I reach into my purse and pull out my phone. I turn on my mobile data. In the search bar, I type: The Flower Den. Tyrel is right about one thing. I’ve been naive. I may never get my wolf. May never find a sacred mate bond. I’ve been saving myself for a wolf who doesn’t exist. No more. Right now, I need money. I need Tyrel out of my system before this ache in my chest kills me. I open the brothel website and tap the menu. Click Here to Become a Flower stares back at me. My thumb hovers only a second. I don't think anymore. So I tap the menu." >>😍Over 95% of our readers can't stop recommending this! 👉👉
