After my boyfriend's childhood sweetheart, Madison, heard I was allergic to peanuts, she mixed peanut extract into the sauce on every single party appetizer. The second I accidentally ate one, my airway began to clamp shut. Angry red welts spread across my pale skin. With shaking hands, I reached into my Chanel clutch, pulled out the EpiPen that was supposed to save my life, and yanked off the safety cap. Then I froze in horror. What I had pulled from my bag was not my EpiPen. It was a cheap candy toy pen someone had swapped in. When Madison saw my face covered in hives and heard me fighting for breath, she burst out laughing. "Surprise! I had Drake switch it for you." "Selena, can you stop being such a drama queen? Since when does one bite of peanut kill you?" I stared at my boyfriend and forced the words out through my tightening throat. "Drake... if you don't give me my medicine, I'm going to die." Drake frowned and rolled his eyes. "Selena, do you really think you're some delicate little trust-fund princess? I've never heard of anyone dropping dead from a little peanut." "Madison's right. You always make everything about you." I stopped wasting breath trying to explain. I pressed the hidden side button on my watch, the highest-level SOS alert linked straight to my family's private security team. ... Drake glanced at me without changing expression. "What did you just press? Don't tell me you're calling 911 over a prank." He ripped the watch off my wrist and squinted at it for a long time. When he saw nothing unusual on the display, he sneered, hurled the watch worth several hundred thousand dollars onto the floor, and crushed the face under his leather boot. I reached for it, but my throat had swollen so badly I could no longer pull in air. My vision began to blur. "I'm going into anaphylactic shock... give me the medicine." Madison folded her arms and watched me as if I were the entertainment. "Miss Selena, are you really suffering? Or are you just trying to steal Drake's spotlight at his own birthday party?" "It's bad enough you use that black card of yours to buy his attention every other day. Could you at least not ruin tonight?" It felt as if invisible hands were locked around my neck. I collapsed weakly onto the leather couch. Drake and Madison had grown up on the same block in Brooklyn. Afraid I would get the wrong idea, Drake had once sworn to me, "She's like a little sister to me. If there were anything between us, we would've gone to City Hall years ago, right?" Madison had also hooked her arm through mine and played innocent. "Selena, Drake is a clueless idiot when it comes to romance. Honestly, only a sweet Manhattan girl like you could put up with him." I had actually believed their nonsense. But little by little, I noticed something was off. Every time we went out to dinner, she deliberately cut into my conversations with Drake and brought up old high school stories only the two of them understood, shutting me out completely. If I went quiet, she would take a sip of her cocktail and add in that fake-sweet voice, "Selena, you're not jealous because Drake and I are having fun talking, are you?" "Honey, we grew up together. Please don't be so insecure." Now the malice she had always hidden was written all over her face. "You don't even have a crown, but you still act like a queen. Does your rich-girl skin crawl the second Drake isn't orbiting you?" "And now you're pretending to die so you can emotionally blackmail him?" In the VIP room, Drake's fraternity buddies broke into sharp, ugly laughter. "I'm really... allergic to peanuts... please, the medicine." I dragged up the last of my strength and rasped it out. The room went quiet for one second, then exploded into even louder laughter. Madison's voice cut through the pounding hip-hop like glass. "Oh my God, she's committing to the bit! Drake, your girlfriend deserves an Oscar." "Drake, don't tell me you feel bad for her." Before Drake could answer, several guys started egging him on. "Come on, feeling sorry for a girl like that is how you ruin your life." "Drake, you're the coolest guy we know. Don't let this drama queen run you." Goaded by his friends, the brief hesitation in Drake's eyes vanished. He lifted his chin and gave a cold laugh. "Who says I feel bad? Honestly, this prank was too tame." He raised his foot and nudged my spasming calf. "Quit faking, Selena. Keep this up and I'll actually get mad." When I did not respond, panic flickered in his eyes. He started to step forward, but Madison grabbed him. "I told you she's a liar. You almost fell for it again. Who turns purple from an allergy? She's obviously holding her breath." I struggled to lift my head and forced a few words through my throat. "Give me... the medicine..." Before I could finish, Drake pressed the back of my head down and slapped me hard across the face twice. My cheeks swelled and burned like tomatoes. "Is this what you want?" He pulled the small bottle of emergency antihistamine tablets from his jeans pocket, poured them into his palm, and tossed them lightly with a nasty grin. My eyes locked on those pills. "Give them... now." Just as my trembling fingers were about to touch them, Drake smirked and stepped back. I fell heavily against the couch and watched him dump every tablet into an ashtray full of cigarette butts, then pour half a glass of whiskey over them. The white pills dissolved in the murky liquor, bubbling in a way that turned my stomach. Nausea rolled through me, and I gagged painfully. "Wow. See? She can still be grossed out. Doesn't look like someone who's dying to me," Drake snapped, spitting the words out. Madison's face darkened with irritation. "Selena, are you done yet? Can you let Drake have one decent birthday?" One of Drake's fraternity friends rolled his eyes too. "We've seen the fake-sick routine before in college. Find a new act." My whole body began to convulse. Every breath felt like swallowing broken glass. "I'm not... I'm really... allergic..." I prayed someone would call 911, but in that entire VIP room, not one person took out a phone. Madison wrapped her arms around Drake's neck and pulled him toward the center of the room. "Ignore the buzzkill. Let's cut the cake. If nobody gives her attention, she'll get bored and stop." When they cut the cake, whether by accident or design, the red velvet slice in Madison's hand suddenly slipped. A thick smear of sweet frosting landed perfectly across the front of Drake's shirt. Everyone around them immediately started whooping. "Drake! Is this some secret wild birthday show?" "Forget napkins, Madison. Clean him up yourself." "Is Drake's rich girlfriend going to get jealous?" "Please. She's busy pretending to be dead." My vision was already scattering, but I saw Drake glance toward me, then smile as he settled his hands on Madison's waist. Through the whistles and cheers, they pressed together without shame and made out right in front of me. My heart felt as if it had been fed through a grinder. I tried to crawl toward the door, but the moment I moved, all my strength disappeared. Just as my consciousness was about to sink into darkness, I suddenly remembered the hidden pocket inside my jacket. I might still have one backup emergency tablet there. As if grabbing the last rope over a cliff, I shoved my hand inside and searched desperately. The instant my fingers touched the pill, my heart lurched. But the lack of oxygen made my hands shake violently. I lost my grip, and the little white tablet rolled onto the carpet. I had just stretched my hand out when... A sharp stiletto came down hard, crushing the pill and my swollen fingers beneath it. Blinding pain shot through me, but I did not even have enough air to scream. "Why?" My bloodshot eyes fixed on Madison. Madison slowly crouched. Her pretty, fake face had twisted into something monstrous. She lowered her voice so only I could hear. "Why should you get everything just because you were born a Kensington?" "Last month, Drake sweet-talked you into making him the beneficiary of that twenty-million-dollar life insurance policy. If you just happen to drop dead tonight, that money goes straight to him, doesn't it?" "Once he gets the money and marries me, your Manhattan penthouse and all those dollars will belong to us." Rage tore through me. I wanted to rip her apart. So that was what this had been from the beginning: an insurance scam. But this broke woman had miscalculated one thing. Under New York trust law, unless I signed off on the final transfer of assets, he could not touch a single cent during the review period. I glared at her, my eyes nearly splitting with fury. My dying expression only seemed to thrill Madison more. Her red lips curled like a snake's. "Sweetheart, you really are hard to kill. Maybe I should send you to hell myself." Madison's cold fingers clamped around my throat and slowly tightened. Death closed over me. A violent instinct to survive drove me to spend the last of my strength on one desperate scream. "Fuck off!" I braced both hands against the leather couch and somehow, impossibly, half rose to my feet. The commotion caught Drake's attention while he was drinking. He frowned and came over. "What now?" Madison instantly put on the face of an innocent victim. She released me and fell backward with a delicate little cry. Drake shoved me away as if I were trash and pulled Madison into his arms. "You have enough strength to push someone while you're supposedly allergic? This act is getting ridiculous." My forehead slammed into the glass edge of the whiskey table. Blood poured down at once, blinding my left eye. Drake stopped in front of me and looked down, disappointment filling his eyes. "Selena, when are you going to stop? I'm done with your BS." When he finally saw my purple face and the blood on my forehead, panic flashed across his expression. He started to bend down, but Madison yanked him back. "Drake, are you crazy? You're actually falling for this?" "If she's really having an allergic reaction, I'll cut off my head tomorrow and use it as a bowling ball." Drake still hesitated. "But she's bleeding... maybe we should give her the medicine." Madison suddenly burst into exaggerated laughter. "God, she really scared you? We were just messing around." She nudged my shoulder with her heel. "Look at her face, red one second and purple the next. She's working so hard for sympathy. Oh, right, she's had her mouth open this whole time. Maybe she's thirsty from all the acting." Drake's tense shoulders relaxed instantly. He even looked relieved. "So she's just thirsty. You scared me for a second." He turned and picked up a glass of ice water from the table. When the cold rim touched my lips, I shook my head with everything I had. My throat was almost sealed shut. Pouring water into me now would choke me to death. Drake's hand froze in midair, impatience sharpening his face. "See? I told you she's faking." Madison fanned the flames from beside him. "You're too soft, baby. Rich, arrogant girls like her only understand force." Drake gripped my jaw so hard his knuckles nearly crushed it. Ice water and cubes were forced into my mouth. The water rushed into my airway, and I broke into a tearing cough. It poured down my neckline and into my expensive silk dress, making me shudder. Drake only laughed harder. "See? The water perked you right up." Darkness pulsed at the edges of my vision. My nails dug into my palms until blood slicked my skin. Madison nodded with a smile. "Much better. Guess she really was thirsty." They turned to leave, and I used every ounce of strength left to clutch Drake's pant leg. I forced my heavy eyelids open. My voice came out like air scraping through a broken pipe. "Help me... I'm the heir... to Kensington Group..." He looked down at me as if I were a deranged homeless person, then burst into a scoff. "The heir to Kensington Group? Selena, why don't you just say you're the Queen of England?" The laughter around us nearly blew the roof off the room. A guy in a baseball cap slapped the table and shouted, "Drake, your girlfriend has been watching too many Hollywood scripts. Want her to do a Beverly Hills heiress monologue?" Drake laughed until tears came to his eyes. Then he grabbed my sweat-soaked hair and slammed my head toward the corner of the table. "Still pretending to be a billionaire? Fine. You can inherit this table." My forehead struck something hard again, and the pain nearly knocked me unconscious. "Go on! Call your private bodyguards!" He dragged me by the hair and smashed my face into the carpet, which was smeared with frosting and cigarette ash. Madison stood nearby with her arms folded and said lightly, "Careful, Drake. Don't actually get yourself sued." Her tone made it sound as if she were worried about an expensive toy getting broken. The oxygen in my lungs was gone. I stared up at the neon lights flashing across the VIP-room ceiling and felt my soul slowly lifting out of my heavy body. At the exact moment I gave up fighting and prepared to close my eyes, bang. With a violent crash, the thick soundproof door was kicked open from the outside. Blinding hallway light cut into the room like a blade.

A car accident left Chiara unconscious for three years. When she woke up, everyone said she had changed. Before the accident, her entire world had revolved around Dante. These days, she might go days without a single text from him. She got word of his hospital stay yet merely had her assistant send takeout soup from a nearby restaurant. She never pressed him for details whenever he spent the whole night away. She offered no reaction to the whispers of another woman. Until the day she was at a private club, watching a dancer’s private performance. Her friend, Summer, sent her a photo. In the picture, the hotel ballroom was lit by chandeliers. Dante greeted guests at the door. He held a woman and a baby. The sign beside them read: “Celebrating the Baptism of Leo Vitale.” Her friend leaned in, studying her face. “People say you don’t care for Dante. I don’t buy it.” “He has a child with that woman. She looks just like you. How can you stay so calm?” Chiara raised an eyebrow. She slipped hundreds into the dancer’s waistband and stood up from the sofa. “Who says I don’t care?” “He’s baptizing his baby boy. We’re not divorced. I’ll attend.” … When Summer followed Chiara into the hotel, the once-lively ballroom fell silent. Everyone there knew Chiara Lombardi. She was the only daughter of the Lombardi family. Spoiled since birth, she had a legendary temper, was brutally direct, and never suffered an insult in silence. If Chiara Lombardi was unhappy, the entire New York social scene would know about it by morning. When Dante saw her, he frowned. “Chiara, did you follow me here? I thought you didn’t care.” “So what are you doing here? I already told you, Lily and I—” “I know.” Chiara cut him off. “I was in a coma for three years. In that time, you fell in love with a woman who bears a striking resemblance to me.” “She got pregnant.” “You wanted her to go to a clinic and ‘take care of it,’ but she ran away and gave birth.” “Now that the child exists, you can’t very well disown him, so you threw this baptism party.” “I’m aware of the whole story.” Her tone was perfectly even. There was no rage, no tears. Lily, however, was trembling, clutching the baby to her chest as her eyes filled with tears. “I’m so sorry, Mrs. Vitale. I swear this was never my intention.” “I just couldn’t bear to…to hurt an innocent child. I’m a woman of faith. I couldn’t go through with it. Please, can you forgive me?” Chiara didn’t look at her. She just reached out to touch the baby’s face. The moment her hand lifted, Dante yanked her back. “What do you think you’re doing? He’s my son. He’s done nothing wrong. If you’re angry, take it out on me.” Dante’s parents spoke up then. “Chiara, it was an accident.” “No one knew when you would wake up. The Vitale family needs an heir.” “This child’s existence doesn’t affect your position. You are still Dante’s wife.” Chiara laughed softly. “Why is everyone so nervous? Did I say I was going to do anything to the child?” She took an envelope from her purse. Inside was a savings bond. Then she produced a Tiffany silver rattle, placing both items inside the baby’s blanket. “What a lovely child. May God bless you and keep you safe.” Her gesture stunned everyone into silence. Dante stared at her. “You’re not angry?” “I’m not angry,” Chiara said. “Lily gave the Vitale family a son.” “For all of you, that’s a good thing. I have no reason to be angry.” “Well, I won’t disturb you any longer. Please, continue.” With that, she turned and walked out of the ballroom. The New York night air was still sharp with a lingering chill. Chiara walked quickly. Summer, clicking along in her heels, scrambled into the Rolls-Royce parked at the curb beside her. As soon as the door shut, Summer pressed the back of her hand to Chiara’s forehead. “You’re not running a fever.” “Chiara, what is wrong with you? It’s like you’re a completely different person since the accident.” “Your husband has a child with another woman. How can you have zero reaction?” “This is Dante. The Dante you’ve loved for ten years.” “The old you would have stormed in there and slapped someone.” Chiara pushed her hand away and smiled faintly. “You said it yourself. That was the old me.” “The old Chiara died in that car accident.” No one knew that in the three years she’d been in a coma, Chiara had lived an entirely different life. In another timeline, she had spent thirty years with Dante. In that life, Dante had also ended up with Lily, and they’d also had a child. When Chiara found out, she’d destroyed the entire ballroom. She’d hit Lily and screamed at Dante, demanding he send the mother and child away. Dante had refused. She used every weapon in her arsenal to drive Lily and the child out of their lives. In the end, all she got for her efforts was Dante’s calculated revenge against her family. He leveraged his resources to systematically crush the Lombardi family’s businesses. Their company collapsed. Her parents died, one after the other. She, too, was driven into a corner, and finally jumped from the top of a skyscraper. When she opened her eyes again, she was back in this reality. At first, she thought it had all been a long, terrible dream she’d had in her coma. Until she saw him—Dante, with that woman who looked so much like her. In that moment, she understood. This was God’s second chance. This time, she wouldn’t waste her life on him. If Dante was rotten to the core, then all she had to do was cut him out. She pulled out her phone and sent a message to the man who, in that other life, had been the one to arrange her funeral. [Divorce from Dante will be final in seven days. Any interest in meeting me at City Hall to get married?] After dropping Summer off, Chiara drove home. The moment she stepped out of the car, she received a reply. [Seven days. I’ll meet you at City Hall.] She slipped her phone away and walked into the Long Island estate she and Dante had shared for five years. Since she’d woken up, almost nothing here had changed. Their wedding photo, taken eight years ago, still hung on the wall. In the picture, her smile was radiant. Dante stood beside her, young and confident, the golden boy everyone remembered. They had known each other since childhood. Their families were close, and the marriage had also been a strategic alliance between them. But there had been real feelings there. After they married, people called them the most perfectly matched couple in their circle. Dante had loved the party circuit, but he’d reined it in after they were married. Chiara, who had never set foot in a kitchen, had been willing to learn to cook for him. She had burned herself on the oven more times than she could count, but she’d kept at it. If it hadn’t been for the accident, if Dante hadn’t given up hope that she would ever wake up… Perhaps they wouldn’t have ended up here. Chiara shook off the memories and surveyed the living room. There were so many things here she no longer wanted. “Maria, take down the wedding photo on the wall and throw it away.” “Mrs. Vitale, that was always your favorite.” “Not anymore.” Chiara pointed to several other decorative pieces. “Get rid of those, too.” The housekeeper hesitated. “During the three years you were in the coma, sir didn’t come home often, but he never let anyone touch these things.” “Now that you’re awake, maybe there’s still a chance for you two.” Chiara shook her head. “There’s no need.” Resigned, Maria did as she was told. Chiara was exhausted and about to head upstairs when Dante returned. He strode right up to her and grabbed her arm. “You really are a ruthless bitch, Chiara.” “I thought the coma might have changed you. Turns out you’re exactly the same.” “You knew Leo was allergic to shellfish. You put shrimp powder in that envelope, didn’t you?” “He’s a month old. Were you trying to kill him?” Chiara looked at him, her expression flat. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” “You’re a phenomenal liar.” Dante’s eyes bored into hers. “You were always good at these little games.” Chiara wrenched her hand from his grasp. “Dante, if I do something, I admit it. I didn’t do this.” “I met the child for the first time today. How would I know he’s allergic to shellfish?” “Besides, even if I did know, I wouldn’t be stupid enough to put something in an envelope and wait for you to come find me with the evidence.” Dante didn’t believe a word. But a cold dread still seeped into Chiara’s heart. “Believe what you want. I’ve said my piece. It wasn’t me.” She turned to leave, but Dante’s bodyguards blocked her path. Chiara stopped. “What do you think you’re doing?” Dante’s voice was terrifyingly cold. “I seem to recall you’re allergic to peanuts.” A chill ran down Chiara’s spine. She’d been allergic to peanuts since she was a child. The slightest contact would cause her skin to break out in angry red hives and her throat to swell. A severe reaction could stop her from breathing altogether. Dante knew this better than anyone. Whenever they ate out, he used to be the one to confirm with the kitchen that there were no peanuts on the menu. “Since you made Leo suffer, you should get a taste of it yourself.” As the words left his mouth, two bodyguards seized Chiara. A maid appeared with a jar of peanut butter and forced a spoonful into her mouth. And then another. Chiara clamped her jaw shut, but the thick paste was forced past her lips, sliding down her throat. The reaction was immediate. Red welts bloomed around her mouth. Her throat began to tighten, each breath becoming a struggle. She collapsed to the floor, her hand fumbling for Dante’s sleeve. “Hospital…I can’t…breathe…” Dante stood over her, motionless. “Does it hurt?” “When you put shrimp powder in Leo’s things, did you ever stop to think how much he would suffer?” “Admit you were wrong, and I’ll take you to the hospital right now.” Chiara curled into a ball on the floor, barely able to force the words out. Still, she insisted. “It wasn’t…me…” “Still won’t admit it?” Dante turned to walk away. Suddenly, the maid screamed. “Sir, Mrs. Vitale has fainted!” “Chiara!” Before darkness took her, she saw Dante rush over and scoop her up from the floor. His face was a mask of panic. But she couldn’t feel a thing. When Chiara woke again, she heard someone crying beside her bed. “Dante, you shouldn’t have done that.” “Leo is your son, but Chiara is the woman you love most.” “You must feel terrible for treating her this way, don’t you?” “I won’t let anyone hurt my son. Not even Chiara.” Chiara opened her eyes. Her throat was raw and painfully dry. She didn’t look at Dante. Her gaze fell on the caregiver nearby. “Could I have a glass of water, please?” “Chiara, you’re awake.” Dante reached for the glass, intending to help her drink. Chiara took it from him and drank it all in one go. Only when the cool water soothed her throat did she feel a sliver of relief. Lily stood nearby, her eyes red and puffy. “Mrs. Vitale, are you all right?” “You were unconscious for a full day. Dante was so worried. He didn’t even go see Leo when he woke up.” “But next time, please, could you not hurt Leo? He’s just a baby.” Only then did Chiara really look at Lily. Since waking from her coma, she had only acknowledged that such a person existed. She hadn’t bothered to look closely. Now she saw that the woman truly did resemble her. But the aura they projected was entirely different. Lily looked fragile, pitiful. The kind of woman many men would want to protect. Chiara placed the glass back on the nightstand. “The concierge at the hotel sealed that envelope for me on the spot.” “There are security cameras covering the path from the concierge desk, to the elevator, and all the way to the ballroom entrance.” “If you want to know if I put anything in that envelope, just check the security footage.” The color drained from Lily’s face. Dante frowned. “How long are you going to keep this up? If it wasn’t you, who else could it be?” “Are you trying to say Lily would frame you using her own son?” Chiara looked at him and smiled faintly. “I’m just asking you to check the footage. Why are you so defensive? I never said she did it.” “Chiara!” “Dante, please don’t fight with her because of me.” With tear-filled eyes, Lily turned and walked out. “Leo just woke up. I’ll go check on him.” Dante watched her leave, clearly wanting to follow. “Chiara, let’s drop this for now. Leo just woke up. I should—” Chiara didn’t try to stop him. “Go. A child needs his father when he isn’t feeling well.” Dante assumed she was being sarcastic. But her eyes were placid, as still as a deep pool of water. Looking into them, he felt an unexpected tightening in his chest. “Chiara, you’ve been acting so strangely since you woke up.” “Do you think I’m going to leave you just because I have Leo and Lily?” “Don’t overthink this. You will always be my wife. Only you.” Chiara looked at his face and found the sentiment laughable. Yet she still managed a smile. “Dante, it’s only right that you take care of Lily. She gave you a child.” “You don’t have to worry about me. I won’t overthink it. I’ve already figured things out.” What she’d figured out was how to leave him. “Really?” Dante asked, his voice low. “Chiara, I don’t want to see you pretending to be magnanimous to my face while you’re hurting Leo behind my back.” “That will only make me despise you.” Chiara closed her eyes. “I’m tired.” The moment Dante left, she called the hotel. “I need you to pull a segment of your surveillance footage for me.” Before long, the hotel sent the video file. In the footage, she never touched anything resembling shrimp powder. But Lily did. While Dante was distracted, she took a small paper packet from her handbag and poured the contents into the envelope. Chiara forwarded the video to Dante with a single line of text: [Evidence. It wasn’t me.] She no longer cared what Dante thought of her. But she would not take the blame for something she hadn’t done.

When they cut the cake, whether by accident or design, the red velvet slice in Madison's hand suddenly slipped.
