Three months into my pregnancy, I called off my engagement to Theron Kensington. He frowned, looking at me. "What kind of tantrum is this? Is this just because my mother told you to get rid of the baby for now?" "Yes." He let out an impatient sigh. "Fine. Just go home and rest. I'll talk to my mother." I didn't reply, and he didn't care, turning away to answer a call from his assistant. "Book two tickets to the Bahamas," he said. "I'm taking her out to relax this weekend." That "her" wasn't me. He hung up and said we would talk another time. But what he didn't know was that the baby in my belly had already been confirmed. It was twins. From then on, we would go our separate ways and no longer entangle with each other. I dialed the phone. "Aunt Corinne, help me arrange the move abroad." Since his family didn't want the child. The child would take my last name and have absolutely nothing to do with the Kensington Family ever again. "Elara, it's Valerie Winslow. Theron gave me your WhatsApp. He said I should keep you company when I have time." The notification lit up my screen the exact second I ended the call with Aunt Corinne. A contact request. I stared at the screen for a long moment. I didn't accept. I went right back to packing. Maeve Gallagher walked in just as I was slipping my prenatal records into my passport. She paused in the doorway. Her eyes swept the dismantled living room before landing on my hands. "You packing?" "Yeah." "Where to?" "Leaving the country." She stepped inside slowly and perched on the edge of the couch. Her gaze dropped straight to my flat stomach. "And the baby?" "Coming with me." "Does Theron know?" "He knows we're done. He doesn't know I'm leaving." "When are you going to tell him?" "I'm not." Maeve's mouth opened. She closed it again, swallowing whatever she was about to say. A few seconds ticked by before she shifted gears. "Why exactly is his mother forcing you to get rid of it?" My hands stopped moving. Mrs. Kensington's exact words echoed in my head. "Elara, I had the birth charts read. This baby's astrological signs clash with Theron's. You cannot keep it. Astrologer Vane said you have to terminate the pregnancy." When I told Maeve, she crushed the tissue in her hand into a tight, angry ball. "She's using astrology as an excuse?" "Yeah." "What did Theron say?" "He said he'd talk to her." I folded a sweater, smoothing out the fabric. "Then he called his assistant right in front of me and booked two tickets to the Bahamas. He's taking Valerie." "Who the hell is Valerie?" "His childhood friend. She moved back from abroad two months ago. He said she needed a getaway to relax." Maeve stared at me. The rims of her eyes turned a violent, glassy red. "You're doing the right thing." My phone vibrated on the mattress. Valerie had switched tactics. A direct text message this time. "Elara, Theron mentioned you haven't had much of an appetite. I made some beef bone broth and left it with the security guard at your gate. Make sure you grab it." I passed the phone to Maeve. She read it, her head snapping up. "He had her bring you soup?" "That's what it says." "Where is he?" "Booking their flight to the Bahamas." Maeve shoved the phone back into my hand. A heavy, suffocating silence filled the room. Half a minute later, she got up. She walked over to the closet and started pulling clothes off hangers, folding them into my suitcase one by one. "What do you need me to do?" "Ship that box of books to Aunt Corinne's place for me." "Done." I flipped open my prenatal checkup records on the bed, staring at the black-and-white ultrasound image. Maeve leaned over my shoulder. "Twins?" "Confirmed this morning." "Does he know?" "No." "You're really not going to tell him?" "He doesn't even want one." I closed the folder. "What difference does it make if I tell him there are two?" Maeve dropped the subject. She finished packing the rest of my things in silence. At the door, she paused, throwing one last look over her shoulder. "Take care of yourself. Call me the second you need anything." "I will." The door clicked shut. I sank back into the couch and rested my hand flat against my stomach. Theron walked through the door at nine that night. He toed off his shoes in the entryway and froze. His gaze locked onto the suitcase sitting by the console table. Two seconds later, he strode into the living room. "Where are you going?" "Staying out for a few days." He dropped onto the cushion beside me. His arm reached out, trying to loop over my shoulders to pull me in. "Still throwing a tantrum? I told you I'd talk to my mother." I didn't lean into him. "Did you tell Valerie to drop off that soup?" His arm stiffened. "She said she wanted to meet you, so I gave her the address. She's a good person. You two should talk more." "You gave our home address to a woman I don't know." "What do you mean you don't know her? I've talked about her a million times. We grew up together." "You didn't ask me." He let out a long, heavy exhale. "Fine. I'll ask you first next time. Just unpack the bag." "Did you cancel the Bahamas trip?" Three seconds of dead air. "Her ticket is already booked. It wouldn't look right to cancel it now." "Then go." I stood up and grabbed the handle of my suitcase. He shot up off the couch and stepped right into my path, blocking the door. "Elara, do you even want this relationship to work anymore?" I looked up, meeting his eyes dead-on. "Theron. Your mother ordered me to abort your child, and you call my reaction a tantrum. You handed my personal contact to another woman, and you think I'm overreacting. You booked two tickets to the Bahamas with her, and you think I'm being unreasonable. So tell me. What actually matters to you?" He didn't have an answer. His phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out and glanced at the screen. A call from Valerie. He looked at the caller ID, then back at me. "She's been having terrible insomnia lately. I need to take this." He swiped to answer and walked out onto the balcony. His voice drifted back through the glass door, soft and patient. "What's wrong? Can't sleep again?" I gripped my suitcase and walked out the front door. I didn't wait for him to hang up. The elevator doors slid shut. I pulled out my phone and fired off a text to Aunt Corinne. "Expedite the visa." Her reply came through a second later. "Understood." ### Chapter 2 "Elara, you are pushing Theron." The call came earlier than expected. I hadn't even finished my hotel breakfast. "Mrs. Kensington." Two seconds of dead silence on the line. "What did you just call me?" "We broke up. It isn't appropriate to call you Mom anymore." "Broke up?" Her voice spiked, laced with pure, offended fury. "You just decide that? What about the baby?" "I thought you didn't want me to keep it." "That was for your own good. Yours and Theron's. Astrologer Vane read the charts—that child’s astrological signs clash with my son's. Keeping it will ruin your marriage." "There is no marriage anymore." "Elara, don't think you can throw a tantrum just because Theron spoils you. Listen to me. Keep the baby, abort it, I don't care. But you will not use it to hold my son hostage." "I'm not threatening him. I left." "Left? Where could you possibly go?" I let the silence hang. She kept talking, looping through the same tired demands—stop making a scene, come home, rein in my temper, Theron was willing to compromise. I let her run out of breath. "Mrs. Kensington, I respect your choice. Please respect mine." I hit end. The phone barely hit the mattress before a knock sounded at the door. I pulled it open, expecting room service. Valerie stood in the hallway. She held an insulated tote bag, her smile perfectly practiced. "Elara. I finally get to see you." I didn't step back. "Theron said you moved out. He asked me to check on you." "There's no need." "Well, I'm already here." She shoved the bag forward an inch. "Herbal chicken broth. Good for the stomach. I simmered it for three hours last night." I kept my hands at my sides. Her smile stayed plastered in place as she set the bag on the carpet by my feet. "I'll just leave it. Drink it whenever you want." I grabbed the door handle, ready to shut it in her face, but she spoke again. "Elara, actually, there's something else." Her voice dropped into a conspiratorial whisper. "Theron is under a lot of pressure right now. With the company, and the fight with you... He stayed at my place until two in the morning last night." My stomach hollowed out. At ten o'clock last night, he had texted me: *I'll pick you up tomorrow.* Right after hitting send, he went straight to her. Valerie's eyes widened slightly, a perfectly calculated backtrack. "Oh, it's not what you think. He just needed someone to talk to. We've been like this since we were kids. You're the only one in his heart, Elara. I keep telling him what a good girl you are, how he needs to cherish you." Every word was wrapped in fake sisterhood. Every word was a knife, carving out her territory, reminding me that she knew him better, longer, deeper. "Thanks." "Elara, don't fight with him anymore, okay? He's bad with words, but he really cares." "Right." "I'll go now. Drink the soup. You're carrying a baby, don't starve yourself." She turned on her heel and walked down the hall. I shut the door and sank onto the edge of the bed. The screen of my phone lit up. A text from Theron. *Did Valerie stop by? She's great. You two should hang out more.* A second bubble popped up. *I'll pick you up after work. Don't run off.* I ignored it. Pulling a piece of hotel stationery from the nightstand, I grabbed a pen and copied down the travel checklist Aunt Corinne had sent me. Visa tomorrow. Flight confirmed the day after. Bank documents sorted this afternoon. My pen stopped. The screen glowed again. A WhatsApp message from Mrs. Kensington. It was a screenshot of a chat between her and Valerie. Valerie: *Mrs. Kensington, Elara isn't doing well today. I'm going over to check on her and talk some sense into her.* Mrs. Kensington: *Good girl. Thank you for the trouble.* Valerie: *No trouble at all. We're all family.* Beneath the image, Theron's mother had added her own commentary: *Look at Valerie. See how sensible she is? If you were even half as easygoing, I wouldn't have to be so hard on you.* I stared at the glowing pixels. Something clicked. Valerie had only been back in the country for two months. Yet Mrs. Kensington called her *good girl*. The polite exchange reeked of a deeply polished, comfortable intimacy. Two months wasn't enough time to build that. This was a relationship that had been cultivated for a long time. I dropped the phone into my bag and walked out. As I crossed the lobby, the front desk receptionist flagged me down. "Ms. Sterling, someone left this for you." A bouquet of pink carnations. I plucked the small card from the center. *Don't be unhappy, Elara. Everything will be fine. —Valerie.* I dropped the card back into the petals. "Throw it in the trash." Pushing through the revolving glass doors into the morning air, I pulled out my phone and texted Maeve. *I need you to look into something. Find out exactly when Valerie started talking to the Kensington family before she moved back.* Maeve's reply came in seconds. *What are you thinking?* I typed back without breaking stride. *I think her two-month timeline is a lie.* ### Chapter 3 "Elara, are you here for your things? I can help you look." Valerie stood in the center of the living room. I froze in the entryway for two slow seconds before stepping inside. "No need. I'll find them myself." A new box of herbal tea sat on the coffee table. From the kitchen, the heavy, savory scent of simmering soup hung in the air. On the fridge door, a bright sticky note caught my eye. The handwriting wasn't mine. *Theron, remember to drink water.* Valerie trailed behind me. "Theron mentioned this morning you might drop by for your stuff, so he asked me to host you. He's tied up at the company and won't make it back for lunch." "He asked you to stay here?" "Yeah. His stomach's been acting up lately, so I put together a dietary plan for him. I need to keep an eye on the soup." I walked into the bedroom and yanked open the nightstand drawer. Property deeds. Birth certificate. Bank books. I pulled them out one by one and shoved them into my bag. Valerie leaned against the doorframe, watching me. "Elara, can I ask you something?" "Yeah." "Are you really leaving Theron?" "Yeah." She dropped her gaze. "Then what about him?" "He has you." Valerie waved her hands frantically. "You're misunderstanding. Theron and I are really just friends. I've had a hard time adjusting since I moved back, and he's been helping me out. I just wanted to repay him." "By living in his house, making him soup, and leaving sticky notes on his fridge?" She stiffened, a flush creeping up her neck. "Elara, I just wrote that casually. It didn't mean anything." I dropped the subject and walked into the closet. I slid the doors open. Theron's clothes hung neatly on the left. The right side, which used to be entirely mine, was mostly bare. Hanging in the empty space were three brand-new outfits, tags still dangling from the sleeves. Definitely not my style. Valerie's voice drifted in from behind me, quiet and timid. "Mrs. Kensington bought those for me. She told me to wear them when Theron and I go out this weekend." This weekend. The Bahamas. His mother bought another woman clothes and hung them in my closet. I reached up, grabbed my last few jackets off the rack, folded them tight, and stuffed them into my bag. I shoved past her and stepped back into the living room. The soup bubbled on the stove. The front door lock clicked, and Theron walked in. His eyes dropped to the heavy bag on my shoulder, shifted to Valerie, and his brow furrowed. "Why didn't you call me when you got here?" "Just grabbing my things." His gaze caught the edge of my birth certificate peeking out of the bag. His face hardened. "What do you need that for?" "Going abroad." "Abroad? Where?" "Haven't decided." "Elara." His voice went dark. "Can you stop pulling these stunts every single day? You're pregnant. You aren't going anywhere." Valerie chimed in right on cue. "Theron, don't yell at Elara. She probably just wants to get away and clear her head." Theron shot her a look. "Valerie, go check the soup." She slipped into the kitchen. He waited until she was gone. "I just found out about the clothes. My mom took it upon herself to do that." "You don't even know what happens in your own home. Your mother buys clothes for another woman, hangs them in my closet, and you have no idea." "I told you I just found out." "And what did you do about it?" He opened his mouth. I waited. Those few seconds of silence, just like last time, were all the answer I needed. "You said you'd talk to her, Theron. What did you talk about? She calls Valerie a good girl, buys her clothes, hangs them in my space, and texts me to learn from her. Is that the result of your talk?" His face tightened. "I'll handle it." "When?" "In the next couple of days." "Aren't you going to the Bahamas in the next couple of days?" He took a sharp breath. Valerie's voice floated out from the kitchen. "Theron, the soup is ready." He called back a quick response, then turned his focus back to me. "Let's meet up tonight and actually talk. Just... don't leave yet." I hoisted the bag higher on my shoulder and walked to the front door. "Enjoy the soup. I'm not hungry." ### Chapter 4 "Elara, did you really think hiding in a hospital would stop me from finding you?" Mrs. Kensington's voice cut through the quiet hum of the obstetrics waiting room. I was just sitting there, waiting for my number to be called. About eight other pregnant women were scattered around the room with their husbands or mothers-in-law. At the sudden outburst, every single head snapped in our direction. I pushed myself to my feet. "Mrs. Kensington. This is a hospital." "I'm perfectly aware of where we are." She marched over, her heels clicking sharply against the linoleum. "I also know you're here for a prenatal checkup. What, you and my son break up, and you still have the nerve to come to a Kensington hospital?" It wasn't a Kensington hospital. But her family had VIP access, and she personally knew the Head of Obstetrics. In her mind, she owned the building. Valerie trailed right behind her, clutching a thermos to her chest with a perfectly crafted look of concern. "Mrs. Kensington, please keep your voice down. There are pregnant women here." Mrs. Kensington dropped her volume, but not her venom. "Elara, let me be blunt. You are not keeping this baby. Astrologer Vane read the charts. The signs clash entirely. If you keep it, you'll ruin Theron's luck." "Mrs. Kensington, Theron and I are done. The baby will take my last name. It has absolutely nothing to do with your family." She froze. Then, a sharp, mocking scoff slipped past her lips. It wasn't loud, but in the dead-quiet waiting room, it sounded like a gunshot. "Your last name?" Her eyes narrowed. "A Kensington child taking your name?" "We were never married. The baby can take my last name." "Are you threatening me?" "I'm stating a fact." She looked me up and down, her gaze scraping over my casual clothes. "Elara, I won't sugarcoat this anymore. Theron and Valerie grew up together. They're a match I've wanted from day one. You just showed up late. It's not that I look down on you, but you two were never meant to be. While we can still handle this with some dignity, get rid of the child. Make a clean break. It's better for everyone." I shifted my gaze to Valerie. She just stood there, staring at the floor, fingers white-knuckling her thermos. If it wasn't true, she would have denied it. She didn't say a word. The husband of a woman sitting two seats away finally had enough. He stood up. "Lady, this is a public space. Do you mind keeping it down?" Mrs. Kensington snapped her head toward him, hitting him with a glare so icy the man physically shrank back a half-step. I took a slow breath, my hand instinctively sliding down to shield my lower belly. "Mrs. Kensington. I am raising this child myself." "You?" Her voice spiked. "With what money? What's your monthly salary? Do you have any self-awareness about where you come from? You're a small-town girl who only survived in this city because Theron pulled you up out of the mud. And now you have the nerve to reject the Kensington family?" The waiting room was dead silent. Every single pair of eyes was glued to us. Valerie finally decided to play peacekeeper. "Mrs. Kensington, please stop. Elara is having a hard time." She turned her doe eyes on me. "Elara, she doesn't mean it like that. Try not to take it to heart, she's just worried about Theron." She tugged gently at the older woman's sleeve. "Come on, let's just go. Let her get her checkup in peace." Mrs. Kensington let herself be pulled away for exactly two steps before she stopped dead. She spun back around, dug into her designer bag, and slapped a piece of paper onto the plastic armrest of the waiting chair. "Three hundred thousand. Get the abortion. Buy yourself some nice supplements for the recovery." I just stared at the slip of paper. Trying to process that this was actually happening. A woman was standing in a maternity ward, surrounded by expecting mothers, slapping down three hundred grand to buy the death of her own grandchild. A vicious cramp suddenly tore through my abdomen. I gasped, my hand shooting out to grip the back of the chair to stay upright. Then another wave hit. Harder. Sharper. A triage nurse rushed over. "What's wrong? How many weeks are you?" "Twelve," I forced out through gritted teeth. "Twins." All the color drained from the nurse's face. "Sit down right now. Do not move. I'm paging a doctor." Mrs. Kensington remained standing a few feet away, her check still sitting on the chair. "Oh, please. Stop putting on a show for sympathy." Valerie dropped to a crouch beside me, her hand reaching out to grab my arm. "Elara, don't be scared. You're going to be okay." I violently yanked my arm out of her grip. A doctor sprinted down the hall pushing a wheelchair, barking at me to sit. I slumped into it. Mrs. Kensington was still rooted to the spot, suddenly unsure if she should walk away or stick around to see the damage. Just as the nurse angled the wheelchair toward the corridor, the heavy double doors of the waiting room swung wide open. A woman stepped through. Her sharp gaze swept the room, instantly locking onto my pale face. She crossed the floor in quick, confident strides, crouched in front of my wheelchair, and placed a warm, steady hand over mine. "Elle, I'm here." Aunt Corinne. The second Mrs. Kensington recognized the woman kneeling in front of me, her arrogant mask completely shattered. The blood drained from her face. Her lips moved uselessly for a second. "Ms... Ms. Sterling?" Aunt Corinne didn't even spare her a glance. Behind her, Valerie squeezed her thermos, her usual act completely failing her. For the first time today, she was speechless. Aunt Corinne rose to her full height. She turned to the nurse holding my wheelchair. "Is the Head of Obstetrics in the building? Page them here immediately." The nurse hesitated. Aunt Corinne didn't argue. She simply pulled a sleek business card from her tailored coat and held it out. The nurse read the name, her eyes widened, and she took off running. Slowly, Aunt Corinne turned around. She finally let her gaze settle on Mrs. Kensington. "Mrs. Kensington. If you ever breathe the same air as my niece again, you will find out exactly what it means to be ruined." ### Chapter 5 "Both heartbeats are stable. But absolutely no more emotional spikes." The Head of Obstetrics delivered the verdict while Aunt Corinne stood by the bed, her arms crossed tight over her chest. "Elle," Aunt Corinne said, her voice smooth and unbothered. "Your flight is the day after tomorrow. Do we need to push it back?" "No." "Good. I've already cleared everything with the obstetrics team in Vancouver. You'll head straight to the apartment the second you land." I gave a single nod. Aunt Corinne dragged a chair over and sat. She reached into her bag, pulled out a stack of documents, and slid them across the tray table. "From the lawyers. Full custody and last name change for the babies. Sign this, and legally, they sever all ties with the Kensington family." I didn't hesitate. I flipped to the last page, picked up the pen, and signed my name. She scooped up the papers and walked over to the window, pulling out her phone. Her voice stayed low, but the keywords drifted over the sterile hospital air. Withdraw all capital. Terminate the partnerships. Effective immediately. She made one call after another. When she finally hung up and turned back, her expression hadn't shifted a fraction of an inch. "We were co-investing in a few of the Kensingtons' projects. Not anymore. I just pulled the funding." "Aunt Corinne, you don't have to—" "I'm not doing this to get back at them," she cut in. "It's about making a clean break. You're done with the Kensingtons, which means my money doesn't sit in their accounts. It's a rational business decision." I let it go. There was nothing left to say. Maeve showed up later that afternoon. She froze in the doorway when she spotted Aunt Corinne, offering a stiff, polite "Ms. Sterling," before sliding into the chair next to my bed. She dropped a plastic bag of oranges onto the nightstand. "I looked into it," she said, dropping her voice to a near-whisper. "Valerie didn't just get back two months ago. She flew back six months ago. She's been staying in a Kensington-owned apartment." Maeve paused. "Mrs. Kensington set it up." Six months ago. Right around the time I found out I was pregnant. "She moved into their place the second she landed?" "Handled directly by Mrs. Kensington," Maeve nodded grimly. "Mrs. Kensington's entire attitude toward you flipped the moment you got pregnant. And Valerie popped up next to Theron right around the exact same time." I leaned back against the pillows. The pieces finally clicked into place. It was never about astrological incompatibility. It was never about a bad fortune. It was about Valerie. Mrs. Kensington wanted her son with Valerie, and my babies and I were the obstacles standing in the way. The fortune-telling was a cheap cover story. Valerie was the root of it all. Aunt Corinne, who had been listening quietly by the window, only said one thing. "Elle. Pack your things. We're discharging you tomorrow, and we fly out the day after." "Okay." My phone buzzed on the sheets. Theron. "Heard you went to the hospital. What's wrong? Did my mom go looking for you again?" A minute later, another text. "Which hospital? I'm on my way." I didn't reply. My screen lit up with an incoming call from him. I hit decline and tossed the phone aside. Ten minutes later, one more text. "Don't stoop to my mom's level. She just speaks without thinking." Speaks without thinking. Pulling out a checkbook in the middle of a crowded obstetrics department, trying to buy an abortion in front of dozens of people. Speaks without thinking. Maeve glanced at the glowing screen, let out a harsh scoff, and looked away. We checked out the next morning. Aunt Corinne's car idled right at the hospital entrance. I walked through the sliding glass doors, my overnight bag in hand. The morning sun was blinding. And there was Theron's car, blocking the entrance to the parking lot. The second he spotted me, he threw his door open and jogged over. His eyes darted straight to my stomach before snapping up to my face. "Are you okay? Why weren't you picking up your phone?" "There was nothing to talk about." "I yelled at my mom last night. What she did was out of line." "Yeah." "Just come home with me, okay? I swear to God she won't bother you again." "I'm not going back." "Elara, what exactly is it going to take for you to just sit down and talk to me?" he snapped, his frustration boiling over. The back door of the town car swung open. Aunt Corinne stepped out and planted herself right behind me. Theron stared at her, not placing her face. "And who is this?" Aunt Corinne didn't bother with an introduction. She gave him a cold, sweeping glance, then looked at me. "Get in the car." "Hold on a second." Theron reached out, trying to grab my arm. "Look me in the eye and tell me where you're going." "She doesn't report to you," Aunt Corinne deadpanned. Theron's brow furrowed. It was probably the first time in his life anyone had spoken to him like that. "Are you her family? Look, whatever is going on between Elara and me—" "There is nothing between you and Elle anymore," Aunt Corinne cut him off flatly. "She dumped you. She's raising these kids on her own, and they have absolutely nothing to do with the Kensington family. The fact that I haven't come after your mother for waving a checkbook around to force an abortion means I'm already being generous." All the color drained from Theron's face. "Paid her for an abortion? My mom did what?" "You didn't know?" Aunt Corinne looked at him with sheer pity. "There's a lot you don't know." She yanked the car door open. I slid into the back seat. The engine purred to life. As the car pulled away from the curb, I watched Theron in the rearview mirror. He was frozen in place, bathed in the blinding sunlight, looking like a man who had just taken a bullet and hadn't felt the pain yet. He shrank into the distance, smaller and smaller, until he vanished completely. I sank back into the plush leather, resting a hand gently over my stomach. "Once we get there," Aunt Corinne said softly, staring straight ahead, "you just focus on taking care of yourself." "I will."

I saw my ex—boyfriend, Alpha Donovan, again today. He didn't just walk back into my life. He dropped in as the new CEO of my company. Three years ago, I made the mistake of slapping his precious first love. In return, she had his enforcers carve my face to pieces. She told me it was his order. After multiple surgeries, I couldn't even recognize myself. I faked my own death just to run away, never imagining he would find me here. I kept my professional poker face on and acted like he was just another boss. Right before clock—out, the Head of Business Development smiled at me. "Vance, there's a charity gala tonight. Are we going?" I was about to nod. Then a shadow fell over the doorway. "Vance is staying," Donovan Sterling said. His voice was calm, but made everyone in the room freeze. "We have two proposals to finish tonight." Under the curious stares of my colleagues, I was called into the CEO's office. The moment the door clicked shut, he pinned me against the floor—to—ceiling window. He took me right there, over and over again. His body was burning hot, but his voice was ice. "Changing your name doesn't change what you are," he whispered against my ear. "You are staying here... with me." Rage flared in my chest, hot and bitter. Eight years ago, he was the Alpha heir. I was a nobody. I tried to stay away from a man like him, but he wouldn't let me. When I was tricked by a rival pack and nearly assaulted, he risked a territory war to tear the place apart and save me. When I broke my leg, he walked out of a multi—million dollar meeting just to sit by my hospital bed. For four years, Donovan treated me like I was his whole world. When I graduated, we went public. I was terrified the Pack elders wouldn't accept me. Donovan shielded me from them. He fought off every demand for him to take a pureblood Luna. Finally, he put a diamond ring on my finger. Then, right before our mating ceremony, Genevieve Sinclair showed up. It started small. Donovan met this neighboring Alpha's daughter for pack business. Then he moved her into the home I had just finished decorating. They stayed up all night talking. I was naive enough to make them midnight snacks. That ended the night I walked in and saw Genevieve straddling his lap, their lips locked together. I screamed. I fought. I demanded he cut her out of our lives. Instead, on the day we were supposed to mate, Donovan stood me up. He stood on a stage with Genevieve, holding her hand, and announced her to the packs as his true mate. Overnight, I became the villain. I was the manipulative wolf who kept true mates apart. Genevieve was the innocent victim. Fine. I decided to leave. But every time I ran, Donovan caught me. The last time, I was at the airport, seconds away from leaving forever. His enforcers surrounded me. Donovan choked me until my voice broke, forcing me to promise I would never leave him again. Then he hugged me tightly. "My relationship with Genevieve is just pack politics. Trust me. When the alliance is set, we'll go back to normal." Go back? When the nightmare finally happened, Donovan was away on patrol. I was sitting quietly in my room, icing my swollen hand. The door was kicked open. Genevieve walked in. The Head Enforcer and two pack maids followed right behind her. Before I could even stand, the enforcers grabbed my arms. They slammed me hard against the floor. Genevieve knelt beside me. She pulled out a silver blade. It was the anniversary gift I had given Donovan. "You scratched my face when you slapped me," Genevieve said, looking at me with cold eyes. "An eye for an eye, Sera." "Let me go!" I thrashed wildly, but the men pinned me down. "Donovan won't let you do this! He promised to protect me!" Genevieve let out a soft laugh. "Who do you think gave me this knife?" My blood ran cold. "The Alpha called me from patrol," Genevieve lied flawlessly. "He said it's time to fix your temper. He told the enforcers to obey me no matter what." The Head Enforcer looked down at me. There was no pity in his face. "The Alpha gave the order. Endure it, Ms. Vance." "No... he wouldn't!" I screamed. Tears spilled down my cheeks. "Shhh..." Genevieve pressed a finger to my lips. "The Alpha said you need to learn your place. The silver will make sure the scars never heal." She pressed the tip of the blade to my skin. The pain was unbearable. The silver burned through my skin, destroying my natural healing. One cut. Two cuts. Three cuts. Blood pooled on the floor, warm and thick. I looked at the enforcers holding me down, blindly following "his" orders. Only one word burned in my mind. Monster. I gritted my teeth until the world finally went black. === When I woke up days later, my head was wrapped thick in gauze. Only my eyes were visible. Panic hit me. I grabbed the nurse's arm. "Why is it wrapped like this? It was only three cuts!" The nurse looked at me with pity. "The silver caused severe tissue necrosis. You had to have a full facial reconstruction." I went numb. "The rogues mangled your face pretty badly," Donovan said. He walked into the room. His tone was casual, like we were talking about the weather. I stared at him. Rogues? He was covering for her. He let her carve me up, and now he was blaming a fake rogue attack to hide what she did. "The pack doctor said the damage was too deep," Donovan continued. He thought he was just fixing a tragic accident. "But don't worry. I hired the best surgeons. I picked out a beautiful new face for you. You'll love it." "I didn't want this!" I hissed. My whole body shook with rage. "I looked like my mother! That face was the only thing I had left of her!" Donovan frowned, waving off my anger. "Your old face just reminds you of the attack. A new face gives you a fresh start. Why can't you just be a good girl?" "A fresh start?" I wanted to laugh, but my skin was pulled too tight. "You're terrifying. You're both monsters." I tried to run for the door. The enforcers outside shoved me right back into the room. Donovan sat down to stay with me. But a minute later, his phone rang. Genevieve wanted him at a pack meeting. He looked at me. I knew if I begged him, if I submitted, he would stay. I didn't say a single word. I looked out the window and didn't turn back when he left. The day before I was discharged, I was finally alone with my surgeon. I pulled the six—million—dollar diamond ring off my finger and put it in his hand. "This ring is worth a fortune," I whispered. My eyes were dead. "During my next surgery... make sure I 'die' on the operating table." ###Chapter 2 Sudden footsteps echoed outside the door. The doctor quickly gripped the diamond ring and pulled his hand back. He shifted his posture, pretending to check the healing of my skin. "Come back for a follow—up in a month," he said loudly. "Don't forget." The door was pushed open. A pack enforcer walked in. Seeing nothing out of the ordinary, he looked at me. "Ms. Vance, the driver is here." I walked outside. The back seat of the car was empty. Donovan Sterling hadn't come. I wasn't surprised. Ever since he brought Genevieve back and announced her as his true mate, he was rarely involved in my life. I took a flight back to the Pack's main city. The driver took me straight to the estate Donovan used to keep for us. The moment I stepped out of the car, I shivered. The weather had taken a sharp turn. A freezing winter front had moved in today. The thin dress I was wearing offered no protection against the biting wind. I wanted nothing more than to get inside. I walked quickly to the electronic lock at the front door. The camera scanned me. "Error. Facial recognition failed," the machine chirped. I tried three more times. The red light flashed every time. The reality of the situation finally hit me. I reached up and touched my face. I didn't even recognize this face anymore—how could a digital lock? I took a shaky breath of the icy air and turned to one of the enforcers standing behind me. "Give me your phone." Since my first real attempt to run away, Donovan had taken my phone. I had to ask for permission for everything now. I dialed Donovan's private number. I called five times before someone finally picked up. It was Genevieve. "Hello?" Her soft, arrogant voice came through the speaker. Soft piano music played in the background. I swallowed my pride and kept my voice low. "Tell Donovan to unlock the door. I can't get in." "Donovan is at a Pack charity gala with me," Genevieve said lazily. "You'll just have to wait." The line went dead. I stared blankly at the screen. Genevieve was allowed to answer the Alpha's private phone. He never let anyone else touch it. And she had managed to drag a man who hated social events to sit through a gala just for her. Both facts felt like a cruel joke. A sudden gust of wind whipped against my bare legs. I rubbed my freezing arms and turned toward the car to wait out the cold. Before my hand could even touch the door handle, the driver shoved me hard. "Get lost!" he sneered. "This car is reserved for the Luna. Do you think you're the Luna? You got a ride from the airport; don't push your luck." I stumbled backward. The driver looked at me with pure disgust. "If you're desperate enough to be a low—life mistress, surely you can handle a little wind." I fell back, and the enforcer behind me grabbed my arm before I hit the ground. My face was turning pale from the cold. My teeth chattered. I looked at the enforcer. "Get the driver under control. I'm getting in that car." The enforcer didn't move. His voice was completely flat. "Ms. Vance, the Alpha's orders are to watch you and make sure you don't run. Your comfort is not our concern." My throat felt like it was clogged with ice. It took a long time for a bitter, humiliated laugh to escape my lips. I turned around in silence. I hugged my arms around myself and walked away. The two enforcers followed at a distance. Shivering violently, I waved down a passing car. The first one stopped. It was a friendly—looking she—wolf from the pack who lived nearby. I bit my lip. A wave of shame washed over me. "Could I... could I borrow two hundred dollars? I don't have my phone or my wallet. I just need to buy a blanket at the convenience store..." The woman smiled and pulled out her wallet. She even offered to drive me there. But then the enforcers caught up, standing silently behind me. The woman froze. She squinted at my unfamiliar face, then noticed my stiff posture. "Seraphina?" she asked, hesitating. When she realized it was me, her friendly smile vanished. She reached out and snatched the bills back. I gripped the money tightly, refusing to let go. "Brenda," I pleaded, my voice shaking from the cold. "Two years ago, when your mate was exiled from the pack businesses and you had nowhere to live, I was the one who helped you. I convinced Donovan to give your mate a second chance. That's how your family survived." Brenda's expression turned vicious. "If I'd known you were a slut trying to break a true mate bond, I never would've taken your help!" My body was weak from the surgeries. After a short struggle, she yanked the money out of my hands. "The Luna has been back for a year and a half, and you still won't leave. Did you get a new face just to keep seducing the Alpha? You are pathetic." My former friend tore the bills into pieces right in front of my eyes. She threw the scraps onto the frozen ground. "You're a homewrecker. You don't belong in this pack. And the money you touch is filthy too!" ###Chapter 3 I clenched my fists. The biting wind cut right through my thin dress. "Donovan was the one who chased me!" I shouted. I sounded like a crazy woman, but I couldn't stop. "I am his chosen mate!" "Stop dreaming," Brenda sneered. "When the Alpha built this pack territory, he saved the best house for his Luna. If you are his mate, why is Genevieve living there?" I looked at the red roof in the distance. The truth hit me hard, wiping away all my anger. She was right. That was the best house in the entire territory. It was the house I had spent two years decorating. It was the house where I thought I would raise our pups and live a happy life. It was perfect. But since the day it was finished, I hadn't spent a single night in it. Seeing my blank face, Brenda spat on the ground. She got in her car and drove away. The exhaust from her car sent the torn pieces of money flying into the air. I chased after them. I bent down, picking them up piece by piece. I was so cold. If I could tape the scraps back together, I could buy a blanket. Money was much more useful than pride right now. My fingers were red and numb. They shook so badly that the pieces kept slipping from my hands. It didn't matter anyway. Brenda would tell everyone in the pack. The convenience store here wouldn't sell anything to a wolf who angered the Luna. I crumpled the scraps into a ball and threw them away. Hugging my arms around myself, I walked past that beautiful mate house and went back to the house next door that was supposed to be mine. I found a spot by the locked door to hide from the wind. I sat down, pulled my knees to my chest, and waited. I waited from noon until evening. Then from evening until the early hours of the morning. By the time I finally caught the scent of pine and winter snow, I couldn't feel my legs or my arms anymore. Donovan Sterling was saying something to me. But I was so cold and so hungry that my ears were ringing. I couldn't understand a single word. He picked me up and carried me inside. I stayed curled up in his arms, completely limp. I didn't wake up until the smell of warm, cooked meat hit my nose. My mind cleared instantly. I rushed to the dining table, grabbed a spoon, and shoved a huge bite of meat into my mouth. Genevieve sat across from me. She watched me eat. After I took five or six bites, she let out a slow, fake gasp. "Oh no! I grabbed the wrong bowl!" she said, covering her mouth. "Donovan told the kitchen to cook fresh food for you. But those are the scraps for the stray dogs. Sera, how could you not even look at what you're eating? You eat just like a starving stray." She pointed at the gnawed bones and chunks of gristle and fat mixed in the bowl. I stopped chewing. Nausea hit my stomach hard. A whole day of freezing and humiliation welled up in my eyes. One single tear dropped onto the table. Genevieve giggled. I wiped the tear away, kept my face completely blank, and swallowed the dog food. Back when I was poor and had no pack, I had eaten worse things than this. Why be disgusted now? Being fussy is a luxury for people who are warm and full. Donovan walked into the dining room just as I shoved another large bite into my mouth. He had been on the phone dealing with the pack business. He looked at the bowl and saw the jumble of scraps and fat that looked like slop. He froze. "Stop eating that!" he barked. I acted like I didn't hear him and took another bite. "I said stop!" Donovan took two long strides and swept the bowl right off the table. It crashed onto the floor. He grabbed my chin and pinched my cheeks hard, forcing my mouth open so I would spit the food out. I looked at the mess on the floor. Something inside me finally snapped. "I don't have the strength to clean the house! I don't have the strength to cook!" "I just wanted to be full, take a shower, and sleep! Why is that so hard? Why is it so damn hard?!" I started screaming. I grabbed a glass vase and threw it against the wall. I smashed everything I could reach. "Sera!" Donovan lunged forward. He pinned my arms to my sides and pulled me against his chest. By the time I stopped fighting, I was in the bathtub. Donovan was running hot water over my freezing skin. It was warm. It felt safe. Through the steam, I looked up. His cold eyes actually held a flicker of pity. "Genevieve grabbed the wrong bowl," he said softly, wiping wet hair from my face. "It was an accident. Don't hurt yourself just to spite her. You're only making things worse for yourself." He paused. His hand left my face. His voice turned cold again. "The glass you smashed scratched her ankle. When you are done washing, put some clothes on. Go downstairs and apologize to her." ###Chapter 4 I looked at him. The pity I thought I saw in his eyes was gone. Donovan Sterling gently stroked my cold cheek. "I'll make that seafood pasta you love. Take a bath. It'll be ready when you're out." It didn't matter if I wanted the pasta or not. The apology was a command. If I disobeyed the Alpha, I didn't know what kind of hell I would wake up to tomorrow. Washing quickly, I put on dry clothes and walked downstairs. Genevieve Sinclair sat on the sofa. She yawned, looking at me with a mocking smile. "Whatever. First you eat like a starving dog, then you smash things like a mad dog. I'm not going to lower myself to care about a dog's temper." Keeping my head down, I forced my face blank and acted like I didn't hear the insult. Donovan walked out of the kitchen and set a bowl of pasta on the table. He walked over, took Genevieve's hand, and looked back at me. "We're leaving. Eat." I stood still until I heard his car drive away. Only then did my shoulders drop as I fell into a chair, completely out of energy. The smell of seafood and pasta filled the room. It was my favorite. Years ago, Donovan had said that he would only cook for two women: his mother and his mate. Back then, I had sat at the table, eating the exact same pasta he made for me tonight, smiling like an idiot because I believed him. Allowing myself to remember that feeling for just one second, I pulled myself back to reality. I picked up a fork, put some pasta in my mouth, and chewed slowly. But I couldn't swallow it, finally spitting the bite into the trash. The dog food had ruined my stomach, and I truly couldn't eat anything good anymore. I don't know why, but the tears wouldn't stop falling. The next morning, I woke up from a heavy sleep and walked downstairs. The dining room was clean, and the smell of fresh breakfast drifted from the kitchen. Three strange women were working in the house, bowing their heads respectfully. One was cooking while the other two cleaned. Over a year ago, Donovan had let Genevieve take all the servants from my house. Today, he had decided to be kind. Even the two enforcers standing guard at the front door were new. Ever since I managed to make one guard feel sorry for me and help me run, Donovan made sure to change them every month. Sitting at the table, I felt completely empty. A maid brought me a plate. "Ms. Miller, breakfast is ready." "Miller?" I frowned, looking at her. "You have the wrong person." The maid looked confused, pointing to a brand—new ID card sitting on the table. "Betty Miller... isn't that you?" I picked it up. Looking at the new face in the photo and the new name, I felt like Seraphina Vance was finally dead. A week later, Donovan came to the house, and I finally had the chance to ask him. "Seraphina Vance is officially dead in the pack records. It was the only way to close the investigation on your... rogue attack," Donovan said. He poured himself a drink, acting completely casual. "Genevieve picked out the new name for your ID. She thought it suited you." He said it so simply, as if giving me a new name was no different than renaming a stray dog. I let out a sarcastic "oh" and forced a small smile onto my stiff face. "You could have... picked a prettier name." My parents named me Seraphina because it meant fiery and strong. They wanted me to survive any storm. My provocative smile made Donovan stop drinking. He frowned. "Sera—" I cut him off. "I know. The name Betty Miller sounds like a nobody. A low—ranking servant who poses no threat to her, right?" "You really let her erase me completely." I couldn't stop laughing, the sound harsh and broken. Donovan's face went dark. He grabbed my arm and yanked me hard against his chest, holding me tight. I fought him, biting his shoulder and clawing at his shirt, but he wouldn't let go. When I finally ran out of strength, he loosened his grip but kept his arms locked around me. Pressing a small velvet box into my hand, he held my fingers and opened it for me. Inside was a massive, blood—red diamond ring. "Do you like it? It's rare," he said softly, leaning down to kiss the corner of my eye. "Genevieve likes your pink diamond ring. She wants to reset the stone and wear it." He took the red diamond and slid it onto my finger. "Red suits you better anyway. Give her the pink one." I stared at the red stone without showing any emotion. Donovan had forgotten. Ever since Genevieve forced me to drink a glass of red ink for spilling her wine, I was terrified of the color red. Just seeing it made me sick. And I couldn't give him the pink diamond anyway, as I had already given it to the plastic surgeon to buy my death. I opened my mouth to lie. But Donovan grabbed my left hand—the hand where I used to wear my mating ring. Narrowing his eyes, he looked at my empty finger. His voice dropped, suddenly dangerously cold. "Sera, where is the ring I told you to wear?" "I... I lost it at the hospital," I whispered, my heart pounding wildly. His grip tightened, nearly crushing my bones. "Don't insult my intelligence, Sera. My enforcers watch you 24/7. You have no phone and no money. The only time you were out of their sight... was your private consultation with the plastic surgeon." My blood turned to ice. My fake death plan rested entirely on that man. "If you bribed him to help you escape," Donovan hissed, pulling out his phone, "I'll rip his throat out. And your final surgery will be canceled permanently." He pressed dial. The ringing tone echoed in the silent room...

"Shhh..." I looked at the mess on the floor.

"Oh fuck... you're bottoming me out again! Too deep... I'm gonna piss myself!" On the night of my remarriage, I climaxed uncontrollably, drenching the sheets. Seventeen times. I whimpered, trying to pull away. He grabbed the back of my neck, thrusting harder. Three deep. Two shallow. The last one hit so deep I swore I could see my stomach bulge. "Who's better? Me or Ethan Carter?" His hot breath brushed my ear. Dangerous. Low. I lay limp against his dark suit, unable to speak. Ethan... my ex-husband. A billionaire mogul. Six years into our marriage, he fell sick with a mysterious disease, slipping into a coma. The Carter family called in a spiritual master, who claimed it was ancestral wrath—and only a "healing ritual" could cure him. I didn't believe it at first. But the moment the ritual girl arrived, Ethan woke. The Master said he had to sleep with her 99 times or fall back into the coma. Every night, Ethan slept with Chloe Davis. The only thing he ever said to me was,"Wait." Wait... while he slept with another woman. By day, I prayed on my knees. By night, I listened to them making love, tears streaming. Until the day I returned with a blessing charm, earned after seven days and nights of kneeling. Just as I reached the door, I heard him laughing with his buddies. "Ethan, you're a genius, man. Faking that illness, inventing a ritual, just to bring your mistress home." "Only someone from a small-time family like Luna Bennett would fall for it. Everyone in New York knows Ethan fears nothing. He'd burn ancestor plaques! How could he believe in some Master or ritual?" My blood ran cold. Ethan wasn't sick. It was all a lie. The charm burned in my hand, searing through my palm. His friend smirked."So, Ethan, Chloe's at ninety times now? Just nine more, then the ritual's over. What's next?" Ethan lounged on the couch, black shirt unbuttoned, legs crossed. He sipped his drink, smirked, casual. "When it's over? I'll just keep her as my side piece, obviously." Cold gripped me, bone-deep. His friends laughed louder. "Told you, man. A few women on the side—nothing wrong. Luna? She's had her five-year stretch. Time served." "Women like Chloe? Innocent look, wild in bed. That's what guys like us crave." "Seriously, Ethan, is she better than Luna?" The glass cracked on the table. Ethan's eyes snapped open—sharp, lethal. "No one comes close to Luna. She'll always be my only love." The room froze. One friend finally asked the question I'd died to know: "If you love her that much, why fake being sick? Luna's been through hell. Your family almost dragged her for 'justice'." Ethan's voice cut through the silence: "The Carters have a legacy. Every woman marrying in must be tested, prove loyalty. I made an exception for Luna back then. Now, the 'healing ritual'... is her real test. She hasn't complained, hasn't caused a scene, even while I've been with others. And she prays for me genuinely." A low chuckle, dripping with smug tenderness: "That proves she's worthy of being a Carter. The suffering? I'll spend my life making it up to her." Daggers. Straight to my gut. I laughed. Then the laughter broke into sobs, tears streaming. The Carters had blamed me for Ethan's 'curse,' their ancestors punishing him—just because I existed. For three months, nothing but abuse and condemnation. When Ethan first slipped into that coma, I cried until my right eye went nearly useless. Sleepless nights followed, chest aching, staring at the ceiling. While he was with Chloe, I was on my knees, copying scriptures until my fingers bled. All fake. Every last bit. All those 'loyalty tests'... high-sounding bullshit. He just wanted to cheat without guilt. I blinked away tears. How had everything gone so wrong? Ethan... he'd loved me once, I was sure of it. Years ago, at the gated community where Mom worked, I'd saved Ethan from a chase. Too scared to go home, he stayed with me a month. He went crazy for me, pursuing relentlessly. I refused, again and again. But he never gave up. Slowly, patiently, he melted my frozen heart. The moment that sealed it? The acid attack. A jealous classmate tried to burn me. Ethan shielded me, taking the scar and pain himself, drenched in sweat, but still smiling."As long as you're okay, Luna." At our wedding, he knelt, holding my hand. "Luna, I, Ethan, will only love you. I'll never let you be wronged." Those words now mocked me. Bitter irony. Tears dry, laughter from the living room still ringing. One friend sighed,"Ethan, Luna's been Mrs. Carter five years. What if she finds out about Chloe?" Ethan's gaze went cold."Then she'll never know. Shut your mouths." "What if she wants a divorce?" He smirked."She's crazy about me. She'll never leave. Even the whole city couldn't help her without my say. If she ran... I'd drag her back. Alive or dead, she's mine." My breath hitched. My nails dug into my arm. Ethan, you're dead wrong. I wiped my tears, tossed the blessing charm into the trash, and walked out. Two things to do: First, go to Mom. I told her everything. She sighed, heavy. "I never wanted you to marry into that family. I thought he was good... who knew? I'm with you, honey. Let's get out." Second, deregister our identities. New names. If he thought Luna was bound to the Carters forever, fine—I'd erase her. It would take two weeks. Patience. But I had to go back to the estate first, stay close, keep him unsuspecting. I returned. And froze. Ethan was on the sofa, Chloe beneath him, pounding. And she... was wearing my wedding dress. ###Chapter 2 The key slipped from my fingers and hit the floor with a sharp clang. Ethan turned. His brows knit for half a second—then his whole face smoothed over, cool and controlled. He buckled his belt, zipped up, and when he finally looked at me, the panic was already gone. "Luna... why are you home?" he asked with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. I dug my nails into my arm. Hard. Anything to steady the shaking in my chest. "So I'm not allowed to come home now?" My voice scraped out thin and shaky. "That's not what I meant." Ethan chuckled lightly."Didn't you go to the temple to get me a Blessing Charm? Why'd you come back so fast?" He reached to ruffle my hair. I jerked back. His smile froze."Don't tell me you're mad... just because Chloe wore one of your dresses." "One... dress?" The words barely made it out. My gaze locked on him, my throat closing up. It wasn't a dress. It was my wedding gown—the one thing I treasured most. I'd sewn every pearl on it by hand. The first time I wore it, Ethan's voice had trembled with awe."Luna, you're breathtaking. This gown was made only for you. You'll wear it for me every year, remember?" And now? He'd let another woman put it on. Worse—he'd had sex with her in it. I searched his eyes for guilt. For shame. For anything. All I found was cold indifference. My heart twisted, sharp and merciless. My knees almost gave out. Was he that confident? That certain I loved him so much I'd swallow anything he did? Ethan stepped closer, took my trembling hand. His tone softened—condescending, almost soothing. "Don't be upset. I'll wire you a hundred million. Buy whatever you want." Chloe's eyes flashed with jealousy before she dropped to her knees, tears shimmering instantly. "Mrs. Carter, I'm so sorry... I just loved your gown so much. That's why Mr. Carter let me try it on." Every word was a jab. Every tear said the same thing—See? He dotes on me. She shot me a triumphant look, then sobbed harder. "Mrs. Carter, please don't be mad... I'll take it off right now and return it—" My gaze lowered to the stains on the hem. "It's dirty," I said coolly."Keep it." Ethan frowned."Luna, don't be ridiculous. You can't just give away your wedding dress." I almost laughed. I opened my mouth— But his phone rang. He glanced at the screen, then at Chloe. Chloe gave a soft, understanding smile."Go ahead, Mr. Carter. Don't worry about me." Ethan shook his head with a gentle look reserved only for her."You always get headaches when I talk business. I'll take this outside. Luna, get up. Stop kneeling." And he walked out. A slow, dull ache crawled through my chest. He never took business calls outside. But for Chloe, he bent even that rule. Now it was just us. Chloe stood, smoothing the gown. Her sweet, fragile act vanished. A mocking smile took its place. "Bet you didn't know?" she whispered."Ethan's 'mystery illness'? All fake. That 'healing ritual' was just his excuse to bring me here openly." "We've been hooking up for over a year. We've done everything—everywhere. When I mentioned I'd never 'played' at his place? Boom. He got 'sick' immediately." She leaned in, eyes shining with triumph. "Luna, his body and soul are mine. What do you even have left? The title?" I looked her dead in the eye. "The title? Take it." Chloe's face twisted with fury."Who said I'll let you have him?! He's always been mine! That spot you're hogging—it's mine!" I didn't react. Her face went ghost white with rage. Then Ethan's footsteps echoed down the hall. Chloe's eyes gleamed with something vicious. Before I could move, she grabbed the steaming teapot and smashed it onto her own chest. "AHHH!" Her scream ripped through the air. She collapsed, tea burning her skin bright red. Then she crawled to my feet, sobbing. "Mrs. Carter, I'm sorry! I shouldn't have worn your dress! Please... please don't hurt me again!" Ethan burst in. His face darkened the second he saw her. "I already compensated you—and you still dared to touch her?!" he roared at me."Apologize!" "I didn't do it. And I won't apologize." "Oh? Still denying it?" Ethan's eyes sharpened."Fine. I'll make you admit it." He motioned to the guards. They dragged me to the Sauna Room. The moment the door locked, the heat slammed into me like needles stabbing my skin. 50°C. 60°C. 70°C. My face burned. My breath turned ragged. Outside, Ethan toyed with his wedding ring. "Still not admitting it?" he asked casually. I pounded on the door. My palms burned, leaving bloody prints that dried instantly. "It wasn't me! Check the cameras!" "No need. Chloe wouldn't lie," he said."You've become disobedient." The heat shredded my lungs. My vision blurred. "I... I admit it..." My throat felt like sandpaper. The lie scraped out of me: "I was wrong." Ethan smiled, satisfied. He lifted a hand. The guards opened the door. I stumbled out, soaked, my body temperature spiking dangerously. Ethan touched my cracked lips gently. "All this suffering... you could've avoided it. No need to apologize to Pure anymore. But—" His voice dipped, dark and cold. "Don't make me repeat myself." My vision went black. My knees buckled. My skin burned, but the ache in my heart was worse. I have a congenital heart condition. Making it to adulthood was already a miracle. Ethan used to be so careful, so gentle. He wouldn't even let the maids speak too loudly, afraid it would scare me. He used to hold me tight and whisper,"You're my whole life. I'll never let harm touch you." But here I was— locked in scorching heat, left to die. Turns out, promises only last the moment they're spoken. ###Chapter 3 I clung to the wall and dragged myself upstairs. The moment I reached my room, I tore through everything tied to Ethan. Photos. Love letters. Postcards from every trip. Then my fingers brushed an old sketchbook—and I froze. Ethan had drawn it all. A timeline of every step of our love. Page one: Our first meeting. I'd found him bleeding out and saved his life. He claimed he fell for me the second he opened his eyes. Page ten: The first time he took me home. Mrs. Carter Sr. told me to crawl in through the doggy door. I'd turned around and walked off. Ethan chased after me, desperate, apologizing over and over. "Luna, I failed you. I let them humiliate you. I swear it'll never happen again." He sent Mrs. Carter Sr. to a mountain retreat for six months after that. Page twenty: He stood before the whole Carter family and announced he'd marry me. Grandpa Carter dragged him to the Family Shrine, threatening him with ancestral wrath. Ethan just scoffed, tossed the ancestral tablets into the fire, and said,"I make the rules now. Who the hell cares about ancestors?" But now... That same "ancestral wrath" was his excuse to drag a mistress into our home. My grip tightened on the sketchbook until my knuckles turned white. Grandpa Carter's warning before the wedding echoed in my head: "My grandson only likes obedient dogs. If you want to stay with him, learn to be a good little dog." I'd brushed it off back then. Thought he was trying to scare me off. Now I knew the truth. Ethan didn't want a wife—he wanted a puppet. Someone who bent when he tugged the string. But I, Luna, would never be anyone's accessory. I didn't hesitate anymore. I threw everything into the roaring fireplace. And when I turned around, Ethan was standing there—eyes locked on the flames. "What are you burning?" His voice was flat. "Just things I don't need," I said. He nodded, then pulled out a first-aid kit."See? Even when I punish you, I'm still the one spoiling you. I'm putting this cream on myself." His hand was warm. His touch was gentle. But my skin felt ice-cold under it. "Luna, Mom's birthday is in three days. I'm throwing a huge party—everyone who matters in New York will be there." "No need," I said."My mom doesn't care about that." "No." He brushed a hand through my hair, soft but commanding."Good girl. I want the world to see how much I spoil you." I lowered my eyes. No warmth. Only exhaustion. Three days later. Carter Group's biggest hotel was packed with New York's elite. "Mr. Carter spoils his wife so much—billions for a birthday party!" "He's the perfect husband. Mrs. Carter's so lucky!" But in a quiet corner, my mom stared at the burn on my hand, her eyes red. "Luna, you've suffered enough. Two more weeks. I'll take you away then." My throat tightened. Tears stung, but I forced them back. Ethan finished a phone call and walked over. "Luna, Chloe wants to come celebrate Mom's birthday too." "I don't want to see her," I snapped. He frowned."Stop being dramatic. She's already coming. Don't make this harder." He walked off, gaze fixed on the entrance—never even glancing back at me. My chest went hollow. Mom dragged me out to the balcony. Cold wind slapped my face. She took off her jacket and wrapped it around me."Look at the moon. Tomorrow will be sunny." "I hope so," I whispered. Footsteps thundered behind us. Ethan stormed out, face dark. He grabbed my wrist so hard I felt bone grind. "Chloe's missing. Did you take her? Speak!" Pain shot up my arm, but I met his eyes."It wasn't me." He stared at me for a long beat... then smirked coldly. "Fine. You won't confess? I'll make you." A chill ran through me. "Get her mother out. Now!" Bodyguards rushed in, yanking Mom away. "Ethan! Let go of my mom! Where are you taking her?" I fought like hell, but his grip only tightened. The ballroom. They forced me to my knees on the cold marble. Ethan lounged on the leather sofa, legs crossed, smoke curling around him. "Where's Chloe?" I shook my head again. I'd lost count of how many times he'd asked. But I didn't know. I truly didn't. He stood, crushed out his cigarette, and gripped my chin. "You're being stubborn." He gestured. A bodyguard stepped up and handed him a phone. The video played. My mother. Tied to a chair. A time bomb strapped to her chest. The numbers on the timer dropped, second by second. ###Chapter 4 Ethan's voice was soft, almost gentle—but his eyes were ice. "Fifty minutes, Luna. That's all you've got." My face drained of color. I stammered, voice trembling,"If I don't find Chloe... you'll really kill my mom?" He leaned in, close enough to see my reflection trembling in his dark eyes. "Try me." My whole body shook. The tears I'd held back for so long finally broke free, hot and fast. "Ethan!" I cried."She's my mom! The most important person in my life! You can't do this!" He laughed softly, chilling."Chloe is the most important person to me too." I froze."Most important? More important than me? Than my mom?" His expression didn't change. "Chloe gave her virginity for me. Sacrificed herself for a Healing Ritual to save my life. She's my benefactor. You... you'll always be the one I love most. Didn't I say I'd send her away once the ritual was done? Couldn't you just wait? Did you have to go after her?" A cold, sharp stab went through my chest. Loved me most? My ass. He faked being sick for a side piece—and now my mother's life was on the line? I was done with his lies. Then a bodyguard burst in."Mr. Carter! We found Ms. Davis!" Ethan snatched his suit jacket and vanished. "What about my mom?!" I lunged for his pant leg."Let her go!" He glanced back, eyes cold as glaciers. "Abandoned warehouse. East NYC. Go find her yourself." I tore out the door, driving like hell. I found her. The bomb strapped to her chest was still ticking—relentless, merciless. One minute left. I ripped the tape from her mouth, trembling as I fumbled with the ropes. "I'm not leaving you, Mom!" I cried. "Luna... forget about me! Just go!" she begged, frantic. Panic surged. My hands shook."I can't—I won't—" Suddenly, Mom shoved me hard. She kicked off her feet, and the chair tipped backward— "Mom—!" I screamed, gut twisting. The explosion hit. Heat slammed into me, throwing me to the ground. Blood red everywhere. Hospital. Mom clung to life. Critical. No guarantee she'd wake. I fell to my knees, tears streaming. "Mom... I'm so sorry. This is all my fault. I dragged you into this..." I whispered apologies over and over, but she didn't move. Hours ago, her hand had been warm in mine. Her voice a gentle comfort. Now... motionless. Lifeless. And him. The man who swore he loved me. I cried myself raw, screamed until my throat burned, then passed out. When I woke, my hand was in someone else's. Ethan. Standing by my bed. Soft, ridiculously soft. "I'm so sorry, Luna. Misunderstanding. Chloe's phone died—that's all. We couldn't reach her. I... I messed up. I was too impulsive." I yanked my hand away. Cold irony twisted through me. This was his "greatest love"? He'd kidnapped my mom because Chloe didn't pick up her phone. He didn't even check first. Bloodshot eyes, rough voice."Luna... don't be mad. You went after her before, so I... I assumed it had to be you. Hit me, yell at me, whatever you want... BANG! The door burst open. Chloe stormed in, red-eyed, puffy. "Mrs. Carter! It's my fault! Don't blame Mr. Carter..." She dropped to her knees, sobbing, tears streaming."If I'd charged my phone, he wouldn't have worried, wouldn't have kidnapped your mom. She wouldn't be like this..." My nails dug into my palms. She was here to rub it in. I was about to throw her out when Ethan bent down, voice impossibly gentle, helping her up. "It's not your fault, Chloe. Don't cry. It's not good for you." Watching them, my heart went icy. Mom nearly died. She's in a coma, fighting for her life. And he worries about another woman's tears? How twisted is that? "GET OUT!" My voice tore through the room, raw. "Both of you. Get the hell out!" Ethan froze."Luna..." "GET OUT!" I smashed the vase on the nightstand. Ethan rose."Luna, calm down. I'll make it right later this week." He shielded Chloe and led her out. The door clicked shut. I collapsed, sobbing, raw. I don't want compensation. I don't want anything. All I want... is for Mom to open her eyes, just once more. ###Chapter 5 Over the next few days, Ethan pulled out all the stops to win me over. Latest jewelry, limited-edition bags, flowers flown in from across the country... I didn't spare any of it a single glance. Until he brought in a medical legend—Dr. Peter. "Mrs. Carter, the bomb? Just a scratch. Your mother's coma? That's from hitting her head on a rock. She needs a craniotomy. Could wake in a week. But the surgery? Extremely risky. I'm the only person on this planet who can pull it off." My chest jumped."Thank you... thank you so much!" Dr. Peter waved a hand."I haven't touched a scalpel in years. I wouldn't even be here if Mr. Carter hadn't given up half his profits and stood out in the rain all night." I looked at Ethan. My gaze tangled with gratitude, resentment, and confusion. After a long moment, I murmured,"Thank you, Mr. Carter." Ethan froze. Hurt flashed in his eyes."Luna... please... don't look at me like that." I turned away. Before, whenever he upset me, he'd soften, plead, and I'd forgive him every time. But this time was different. He nearly got my mom killed. I couldn't forgive him. He stayed by my side throughout the surgery, never leaving. Sitting on the hallway bench, he offered me water, snacks, occasionally squeezing my hand, whispering,"Don't be scared. Mom will be okay." I remembered our first year of marriage. Mom had surgery then too, and he'd stayed just like this—gentle, patient. For a moment, I almost forgot everything. It felt like how it used to be... Except he reeked of Chloe's perfume. Mom's surgery was a success. The next day, I headed out for essentials—but was stopped in the parking lot. It was Chloe. She smiled, blindingly sweet. "You really think Ethan gives a damn about you or your mom? Let me tell you—on the day your mom collapsed, he pinned me down, took me three times... we went at it until dawn." I was already dead inside. "What do you want?" I asked flatly. "Your spot." "Soon," I said calmly."I'll step aside for good." Chloe's eyes narrowed, plotting. Then, suddenly, she threw herself against the car hood, collapsed, covered in blood. I froze. The car wasn't even on. Even if I had hit her, it wouldn't be this bad. Where the hell was all that blood coming from? Before I could process it, Ethan was sprinting over. Chloe gave him a weak smile."Mr. Carter, please... don't blame Mrs. Carter. She's just worried about her mother..." Then she spat up a massive mouthful of blood and passed out. Ethan didn't speak. He yanked me out of the car, then slammed his hand across my face. SMACK! My head snapped to the side, ears ringing. "Luna! I just had Dr. Peter save your mom's life! Why are you still taking it out on Chloe?!" "She walked into it herself," I said, icy and flat. "Still lying?!" His eyes turned to shards of ice."Chloe would never intentionally ram your car!" No chance to explain. He ordered his men to drag me to a blood test. I struggled, strapped into the chair."Check the cameras! Surveillance will show!" "Don't even think about stalling," Ethan whispered, cold and sharp."If anything happens to Chloe, I'll make your mom pay—with her life." His threat froze me. My hands went limp. The needle pierced my vein. Fingertips trembled. Pain radiated up my arm, but my heart ached a thousand times worse. I'd always feared needles. Back then, he'd cover my eyes and whisper,"Good girl, Luna. It'll be over before you know it." Now? He just stared at the blood bag, hounding the nurse,"Faster. Draw it faster." Oblivious to my pale, shivering body. Blood filled the bag. Vision blurred. At 800cc, the nurse warned,"She has a heart condition. Another drop and her heart won't take it... could go into failure." Ethan's fingers trembled, but his voice stayed icy:"Keep going." I closed my eyes. It hit me: he didn't care if I lived or died. Dizziness hit. The last thing I saw was Ethan's retreating back, clutching my blood bag. Then the nurse screamed:"Code Blue! She's in cardiac arrest!" ###Chapter 6 The pain ripped me awake. Harsh fluorescent lights burned my eyes. I tried lifting a hand to block them, but the movement tugged at the fresh incision on my chest. A sharp gasp tore out of me. "You're finally awake." The nurse changing my dressing let out a breath of relief."We worked on you for three days. You barely made it. Luckily, the artificial heart saved you. But your body's taken too much damage. If we can't find a suitable donor within three years... you probably won't survive." I stared at the ceiling, hollow. No light. No feeling. My hand drifted to my chest. Just emptiness. The heart that once beat for Ethan was gone. And whatever love I had left for him... completely drained. The nurse hesitated."Should I call Mr. Carter?" I shook my head."Don't tell him." She blinked."Why? Isn't he your husband?" "No." My voice was barely smoke."Not for much longer." The ward door burst open. Ethan stood there, frowning."What did you say?" The nurse flinched and slipped out. Ethan stepped to my bed."You're still mad about the blood draw?" I didn't answer. Stared at the floor instead. His hand snapped out, gripping my chin and jerking my face up."You screw up, and now you're blaming everyone else? Why are you being so childish?" His fingers left a raw red mark on my pale skin. I just looked at him."What do you want?" He released me, tone softening by a hair."Peter says your mom should wake up tomorrow." My dead heart twitched. The next morning, before the sun even rose, I ran straight to Mom's ward. The moment I reached the door— I saw Chloe tearing out Mom's ventilator. My pupils blew wide."STOP!" My scream ripped through the hall. Chloe looked up, a vicious smile twisting her lips."Luna, you can't stop me. Your mother's life? It's mine now." With a sudden shove, she sent me crashing to the floor. Pain exploded in my chest as my surgical wound tore open, white-hot and blinding. But I forced myself up, putting my body between her and Mom. "Get out! Don't you dare touch my mother!" Chloe stepped forward—then froze. A shadow appeared in the doorway. Instantly, she collapsed to the floor, sobbing on cue."Mrs. Carter... I told you... Mr. Carter sent me to borrow it! Why... why did you push me?" Ethan strode in. His eyes hit Chloe trembling on the floor, and his face turned ice-cold. "Luna!" he snapped."What did you do to her this time?" I trembled, voice shaky."You... you sent her to steal my mom's ventilator?" Ethan's face didn't even flicker."You damaged Chloe's lung. She's been on a ventilator. Hers broke this morning. The new one isn't here yet—so I told her to borrow your mother's for now." His words hit me like an ice bath. "She's unconscious, Ethan!" I choked."If you take her off, she could die!" But Ethan didn't even blink. "Peter said she's fine. It's just for a moment. She's not going to die." My nails dug into my palms. A metallic taste filled my mouth. "Ethan, don't you dare gamble with my mom's life. If she dies, I will never forgive you." His jaw tightened. He hesitated. Then Chloe clutched her chest, whining,"Mr. Carter... I feel terrible... I can't breathe..." Ethan didn't hesitate anymore. "Pull the plug." "No!" I grabbed his arm, begging."Please, you can't—" "Enough!" Ethan snapped."Haven't you learned? I said your mom isn't dying." With that, he shoved me away. His bodyguards dragged me to the corner. Kneeling on the floor, helpless, I watched as they pulled my mom's breathing tube. I screamed until my throat tore, but Ethan didn't even look back. He just scooped Chloe into his arms and walked out. Suddenly— The heart monitor shrieked. Flatline. I slammed the emergency button over and over. No one came. I stumbled into the hallway, screaming,"Doctor! Anyone! My mom—she's dying!" Silence. The entire floor was empty. A horrifying realization struck me: Ethan. He'd ordered them not to help her. I spun toward the stairwell. My foot slipped. I tumbled down the steps, smashing into each one, but I didn't feel a thing. I dragged myself up and kept running. Door after door, floor after floor—eight floors—before I finally found a doctor. By the time we rushed back, Mom was gone. No breath left. No heartbeat. Just one more day. One more day and she would've woken up. I stared at her ashen face, my soul ripped clean out of me. My mouth opened, but no sound would come. Turns out, the deepest pain doesn't let you cry. It just swallows you whole. Ethan. I regret it. I regret ever loving you. God, I regret everything. ###Chapter 7 I knelt all night. The next day, as I covered Mom with a white sheet, I finally broke. I clutched my collar, silent sobs tearing through me. Mom was truly gone. She would never open her eyes again. Never see me. That realization was a knife—sharp, cold—cutting the last shred of life out of me. A metallic, coppery taste flooded my mouth. I coughed violently, blood spilling into my palm. Everything went black. I crashed to the floor. Then, unwanted memories stabbed at me: Ethan, on his knees before Mom, promising. "Mom, I'll love Luna my whole life." "Thank you for letting Luna marry me." "You're Luna's mom, so you're my mom. I'll always treat you right." ... His words, once so sincere, now pierced like needles, twisting with reality until I couldn't breathe. My memories receded, leaving only Mom beneath the white sheet. It took forever to drag myself off the floor. I had to prepare her for cremation. I passed the VIP room. Inside, Ethan held Chloe, cooing softly. "The new ventilator just arrived," he whispered."I want you healthy and happy. Live to be a hundred, Chloe." I stood frozen. A bitter laugh ripped from my throat. So sarcastic. So hollow. The day of Mom's funeral, my husband? Busy wishing another woman a hundred years of life. I set up a memorial tomb so Mom's restless spirit wouldn't wander lost in New York City. I spent the next days at the cemetery, only bringing her urn home when I had to leave. Before I even stepped inside, sounds drifted from the living room—intimate, unmistakable. Chloe, straddling Ethan, both practically sinking into the couch. I didn't look. I walked straight upstairs. My heart was dead. Past feeling. Past pain. Suddenly, Ethan's voice stopped me. Raw, filled with desire:"What's that you're holding?" I didn't answer. Just walked. He stared at my frail back, frown deepening. For the first time, a strange panic twisted in him. I looked so fragile, like I could vanish any moment. Chloe, still in his lap, kissed his mouth."Ethan, I'm aching... please, give it to me..." He shoved the thought away, dragging his gaze back to Chloe. He resumed, indifferent. I showered, dressed simply, and tucked Mom's jade pendant into my bag. Nothing else. Stepping out, Chloe's voice rang from the garden:"Mrs. Carter Sr., don't worry. I'll definitely kick that bitch Luna out!" My heart twitched, barely stirred. So that was it. Mrs. Carter Sr. had brought Chloe in just to ruin me and Ethan. I felt ridiculous. Ethan, all your clever little schemes? You were just a pawn in someone else's game. I never understood why Mrs. Carter Sr. hated me so much. I had cared for her in the hospital for a month straight. I had even donated a kidney. That's why I never had kids in our five years of marriage. Now? I didn't care. I was done. Gone. The Carters, everything—they were dead to me. I hailed a cab to the airport. I bought a ticket to Avalon. Ethan's sworn enemy's territory. He was banned there for life. He would never find me. Not ever. Her phone dinged with a new message. [Mrs. Bennett and Ms. Bennett, congratulations on your fresh start!] I clutched Mom's urn, walking toward the boarding gate. "Mom," I whispered,"let's leave this place together." Just before boarding, Ethan called. His voice was tight, tension barely concealed. "Luna, are you out getting some air? Pure and I just need one more session to finish the Healing Ritual. Our anniversary is in three days—I'm planning a surprise for you. Mom should be awake now, right? Make sure to call her..." I didn't let him finish. I hung up, then blocked and deleted him without a second thought. Ethan. My mother's life—her actual life—had already cut off every possibility between us. From this moment on, we were done. Forever. The plane roared, slicing through the clouds. My cold, detached reflection stared back from the window. No tears. Just fierce, unyielding resolve.
